Sijimali - known to its people as Tijmali, is the sacred abode of Tij Raja. For generations, Adivasi & Dalit communities have lived and protected the land as their kin. Hundreds of perennial streams originate from Sijimali, nourishing the lives of all beings. This is the trailer of our film 'The Mali and The Parasite' which documents the journey of 'Ma Mati Mali Surakhya Mancha' an assertive collective of the people of Sijimali, Majingmali and Kutrumali, covering more than 50 villages in the foothill lands of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts of Odisha. In 2023, Vedanta was granted mining lease for the extraction of bauxite from Sijimali hills. What followed was not just a resilient struggle to protect land and forests, but a battle to protect the indigenous / Adivasi / tribal vision of life-worlds. In Sijimali, public hearings happen surrounded by barbed wires under police watch, Gram Sabha resolutions are faked and corporate-state nexus play dirty games to manufacture consent .... But the women stand guard to protect their forests, hills, streams, lands and Tij Raja. And people assert a truth : Extraction of forests, hills and streams is destruction and to manufacture consent for the same is genocidal. This is not just a story about people resisting mining, but a story of land and forests as life worlds for people who are its kin. ๐Ÿ“ท Stand with the people of Sijimali .... Stand with Tij Raja !!!

Hearing disturbing reports of the arrest of #Indian WHRD Sunita Pottam in Chhatisgargh, seemingly as a result of her peaceful advocacy for the protection of #Adivasi rights and against systemic violations. She should be released immediately @IndiaUNGeneva

The policy of assimilating indigenous communities by putting their children in boarding schools has been increasingly disproved and abandoned, most publicly throughout North America, Australia and Canada since the 80s. In India, this history and its dangers are little known, with relatively little awareness of how residential schooling is being used as laboratories of de-indigenisation of Adivasi communities. This disguised growth of extractive schooling of Adivasi children has now reached an unprecedented scale, with many similar manifestations of the cultural genocide that have evoked resistance elsewhere. Boarding schools for Adivasi children, more particularly in mineral-rich regions, have almost become a rite de passage to becoming a part of an extractive society, and not a means for achieving social justice Mega boarding schools like Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), in Odisha, India not only receive large amounts of capital from corporations that wrest control over Adivasi lands, but have emerged as nodal agents for extractive corporations and Hindutva organisations to engineer indigenous identities and agencies to justify India's booming neoliberal economy.

Todays exclusionary practice of Protected Areas are rooted in colonial occupation. European colonisers brought their hunting tradition (killing for pleasure/sport), a strong market economy & advanced firearms resulting in over-hunting and wildlife loss. 1/12
