The Texans used Braden Smith on 22 snaps and ran on 19 of those. Houston averaged just 3.21 YPC on those runs.
Nick Caley did a great job last week of mixing up with the jumbo packages and hunting explosives with the pass protection. This week it reverted back to early season.

The Texans defense has allowed 29 completions of 20+ yards so far, which is tied for the most in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.
They are allowing an explosive pass on 11.8% of their dropbacks compared to 8.7% last year.

The Rockets have done a nice job with these off-ball screen actions this year, this time with Reed & Sengun.
Forces McCollum to go over with the threat of Sheppard, easy slip to Sengun and the help leaves Durant wide open.
Nice to see Udoka tapping into more off-ball action and player movement this year while letting KD be a play finisher.
It’s hard for me to blame the Texans offense and their staff while they rank 12th in EPA/Play & have been one of the most explosive pass games in the NFL.
There are obvious weaknesses up front and in the run game but if you would have told anybody they would be 12th in EPA/Play with Stroud having 3 total turnovers in 3 weeks they would take that.
The Texans defense ranks 23rd in EPA/Play and in the 20s for both EPA/Pass & EPA/Rush. They have been bad in basically every facet while being one of the most invested into units along with a defensive head coach.
Not For Long for a reason.
The Texans issues preventing explosive plays showed up again today.
J.J. McCarthy generated a 19.4% explosive play rate which was the 4th highest of his career but a 32.3% success rate (2nd lowest) via @NextGenStats.
7 completions of 15+ for McCarthy today.
Texans WRs Routes Run in Week 7 via @SumerSports.
Jaylin Noel likely finishes 2nd on this list but left early due to an injury.
Tank Dell & Marvin Harrison Jr. ran 14 combined routes today but would expect that number to increase out of the bye.
Xavier Hutchinson lead the WRs in targets today.

Penalties have been a thing since 2023, it’s not new.
A few Texans numbers since 2023 via @SumerSports & RBSDM:
- 5th worst in total penalties & 4th worst in penalty yards lost.
- 31st in Go-For-It when you should situations.
- 28th in Offensive Success Rate.
- 31st in Rushing Success Rate.
- One of the more predictable offenses and defenses in terms of tendencies & disguises.
There are far worse rosters with at least 1-2 wins across the NFL for Houston.
Even for all his flaws, there’s a culture and real discipline for the Rockets under Ime Udoka.
Last year, you saw Reed struggle to get minutes because he struggles to defend. Now yesterday you have him out-hustling multiple Hawks for OREBs and playing more sound basketball overall.
Also saw Stone go out and add Smart/Bogi with FVV back too along with adding a elite shooting coach and it’s no wonder the Rockets are the team exceeding expectations.
C.J. Stroud said that he needs to be better and there is a lot of accountability that needs to be had all around.
Demeco Ryans says they look at everything schematically but whatever you coach or run, you have to find a way to play it better.
Demeco Ryans said that if somebody is wide open that means that somebody has made an error and they don’t design coverages for someone to be wide open.
Demeco Ryans said the penalties are ridiculous and they keep happening “over and over again.”
He said they have to find a way to fix it or get different players in.
The Texans offensive play today is far more excusable. Been a top 10-12 offense this year and their 2nd tough game of the year.
The defensive performance has been pathetic. They got beat around and haven’t been able to cover.
There are very serious questions about the execution and discipline with consistent penalty issues and blown coverages.
C.J. Stroud through 7 weeks:
64.8% Completion Percentage
7.6 YPA
12 Total TDs - 1 INT
100.8 Passer Rating
Texans are 2-5.
