One more amazing thing about Brazil and Lula's campaign: The NYT today has a gushing profile of a Congressman named @AndreJanonesMG, who became the face of Lula's campaign, its chief communication strategist. and -- as a result of admittedly innovative though extremely creepy digital strategies -- the greatest hero of the Brazilian left. But listen to what the article doesn't mention: Just 2 years ago -- not 20 years ago or 10 years ago, but 2 years ago -- Janones got caught committing one of the most despicable crimes imaginable: he forced his Congressional staff employees to transfer a portion of their (quite low) monthly public salary to him as a condition for keeping their jobs. The money he stole from his workers didn't go to his campaign: it just went to enrich himself, into his pocket,. He got caught when the employees secretly taped him angrily telling them they should stop complaining. When all this emerged, the left-wing members of Congress loyal to Lula -- who, remember, claims to lead a movement of workers! The name of Lula's party is the Workers Party -- protected him from all consequences from stealing the salary of his workers. The pro-Lula judiciary let Janones confess guilt and simply pay back the money that he stole. And yet this doesn't bother anyone on the Brazilian left. Janones has become a beloved figure overnight among left-wing celebrities and is now one of Lula's closest allies. The NYT profile doesn't even mention this in their gushing profile. In the scheme of Brazil's authoritarianism, it's not the biggest issue, but to me it's one of the most revealing about what frauds these people are:

I wonder why it took this long to bring this all to the forefront? People were calling this out months ago. What changed?
'This was all part of a coordinated effort by Democrats dating back to last year. They wanted to stack the Senate ballot in Mary Peltola's favor.' Kellen Browning, a reporter for the New York Times, joins @jaketapper to share his reporting that Democrats affiliated with Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola worked to recruit spoiler candidates for the race.

“The future of trade does take carbon into account, Carbon is trade” Carney and Ursula over the next several days will introduce their plan to soak businesses, industries and their citizens out of even more money & it will all be under the guise of “fighting the climate” CBAM will make life less affordable, but Carney will claim it’s making businesses “more competitive” These are not good people.

🛬 Touchdown in Montréal 🇨🇦 Rarely have I looked forward to a Summit this much. An ocean separates Europe and Canada. Yet we have never felt closer. We have a new ambition: bringing Canada closer to us than ever before, as Associate Member of the EU. And we want to take our unique partnership even further. With an Alliance for the Future, we will stand together and respond to a world of growing rivalries. Montréal, we’re about to write a new chapter in our shared history.

"While we hate to admit it, we share much with and depend on Americans more than anyone else. Two-thirds of Canadians live within 100 kilometers of the American border. The US covers 60% of the budget for our Arctic defense radar stations. English Canadians consume almost exclusively American arts and entertainment: in 2023, only 3.3% of our total box office revenue came from Canadian films. Currently, 56% of Canadians say they have more in common with European nations than the US. But the hostile American president has completely muddied the polls. Remove Trump from the equation and far more Canadians would agree they have more in common with Americans than Europeans. In the end, Carney’s best intentions, buttressed by globalization, technology and emotion, simply cannot trump geography, history and culture. As much as Canadians might want it to, Europe cannot fill Canada’s America-sized hole. Prime Minister Carney keeps a map of his grandparents’ Irish hometown of Aughagower on his desk in Ottawa. He says it acts as a friendly reminder of where he came from. But that’s just it. The reality is Europe is where Canada came from, not where it is going." @harrisonlowman

CTV is doing the exact same thing In their recent interview, Frank McKenna is introduced only as “Former Canadian ambassador to the United States.” No mention that he has been Chair of Brookfield Corporation since 2010 — the same firm where Mark Carney was Chair of Brookfield Asset Management until he ran for Liberal leader No mention of his long-standing ties to Carney, or that he has repeatedly praised the Prime Minister’s direction Viewers are left with the impression they’re hearing from a neutral former diplomat, not the current chairman of one of the world’s largest asset managers with deep connections to the PM. No mention that Carney still stands to gain advantageously from two specific Brookfield funds Selective disclosure isn’t just a CBC problem @omarsachedina
Frank McKenna has been a director of Brookfield since 2006 and has been the Chair of the Board of Directors for Brookfield Corporation (formerly Brookfield Asset Management) since August 2010. He endorsed Carney for Prime Minister, and he might have been instrumental in his interest to run as far back as 2012... but CBC only calls him "former Canadian ambassador to the United States" CBC's ongoing selective disclosure exposes its biases @brodiefenlon

The EU never backed it. The @EU_Commission President did. This is good lesson for Canadians about the difference btw the EU, the Commission, the Member States & the Parliament. Canadians should have learned this from CETA. Carney should have learned this at the @bankofengland .

Hold on a second. Canadians have been told, for months, that a key tenet in the Prime Minister's whole trade strategy is "walk away from Washington, pivot to Europe". Now we find out his own officials told him in December 2025 that the pivot runs straight into a wall? The EU's carbon tariff hits Canadian steel, iron and aluminum, the same metals already hit by U.S. tariffs. And even though, with great fanfare, the Prime Minister is forging ahead with some kind of "associate membership" for Canada in the EU, an exemption is "not currently possible." In other words, he sat on that detail for 10 months, until an access to information request forced it out days before he hosts the Canada-EU Summit. So the plan is: turn down the August terms that were agreed then disagreed to in three days with the U.S., tell workers Europe is the answer, and quietly know Europe is putting up its own border charge. According to the @CBCNews report, that charge is close to $900M a year in exposure in Newfoundland and Labrador, $792M in Quebec, and adds up to $150 more per tonne of steel by 2034. And recall that he weakened the carbon price in his Alberta deal while knowing that, with it, he made an EU exemption even harder to get. What kind of diversification is it if you're trading one tariff wall for two and hoping nobody reads the memo?
