This is what we have talked about - quick spikes push correlation more negative. +$VIX, +Rates, + US Dollar.
Hard to get a short term bottom if those don't cool

🔴US stocks are now entirely driven by oil price moves:
Historically, whenever crude oil prices surge more than +30%, stocks tend to follow with significant declines, as the correlation between the S&P 500 and oil turns deeply negative.
The 40-day correlation is now at -0.22, meaning stocks and oil are moving in opposite directions, a pattern seen during every major oil shock.
This comes as 4 out of 5 oil shocks since the 1970s have led to a recession, yet investors are still not pricing in the potential economic damage, signaling remaining complacency.
Meanwhile, each sustained +10% increase in oil prices could reduce US GDP growth by 15 to 20 basis points, according to JPMorgan.
If oil holds at current levels for the rest of the year, the S&P 500 earnings estimates could fall by -2% to -5%.
Put simply, if this market correction recovers, another one could come during the next earnings season.
The damage from elevated oil prices is not a short-term event; it will ripple through the economy and markets for months.

There’s oddly been a bit of pushback from folks out there on applying technical analysis to $CrudeOil right now.
I’ve seen comments like:
“Technical analysis doesn’t make sense here.” “This is purely headline-driven.” “As if patterns matter here.”
Technical analysis doesn’t require calm or normal conditions. It requires price.
Policy shifts, supply shocks, strategic decisions - All of it still resolves through buying and selling at specific levels.
Charts don’t care why participants are active. They show us how positioning is evolving.
A base beneath resistance. Repeated failed breakdowns. Shallower pullbacks. Expanding strength.
That’s not narrative. That’s structure.
Technical analysis isn’t used for prediction. It provides a framework for reaction.
And if price is the final vote of every participant in the market - technical analysis is never irrelevant…
