I cannot say loudly enough that the NHS is not okay. There are not enough nurses and the nurses, on average, are much less experienced. People say “yeah yeah the NHS is always understaffed” but this is much worse. The patients bear the brunt. I can’t say more than this.

A new BMJ Analysis finds a UK-US trade deal could cost the NHS a potential £45bn in drug spending and nearly 300 000 excess deaths in 10 years.
The deal sacrifices UK health and wealth, contrary to the rhetoric of government ministers, says @KamranAbbasi

I was an extremely guilty child, constantly wracked with shame. I'm happy to report that this trait has not translated to my daughter, who just fumbled a large watermelon, watched it explode on the ground, and declared "oh well, it was heavy."

I always remember a moment at Shrewsbury (pre Ockenden) when they looked at my folder and said “you say you have all these losses but you don’t have any butterfly stickers on your folder.. and that’s how we normally tell” and I felt sick 🤢

Or any deaths tbh. My daughter isn't a butterfly, she's not an angel, she wasn't too good for this world, she was a human being who should be here and would be here if I had recieved basic care.

NHS SAFETY REGULATOR SACKED THE ONE INSPECTOR WHO ACTUALLY DID HIS JOB
Here's a fun one for you. The Care Quality Commission exists to catch hospitals doing dangerous things. It is the referee. The body every NHS trust in England has to answer to. So when one of its own inspectors kept flagging genuine safety problems, the CQC @CareQualityComm did the only logical thing a safety regulator can do. It sacked him.
Meet Dr Shyam Kumar @ukorthopod, an orthopaedic surgeon who worked part time as a special advisor for the CQC from 2014 to 2019. His job was to help inspect hospitals. Somewhere along the way he made the fatal error of taking that job seriously.
From 2015 onwards Kumar raised concern after concern. He said he was expected to simply rubber stamp inspections rather than actually inspect anything. He flagged safety failings at his own trust, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay. He reported bullying and obstruction inside the CQC itself. Nobody acted on any of it.
In December 2018 the CQC terminated his contract, accusing him of misconduct including using his position to manipulate colleagues. Three of the four allegations were later quietly dropped. The fourth was a letter he wrote trying to resolve a dispute, which CQC lawyers spent years insisting counted as bullying. It did not.
In 2022 the Manchester Employment Tribunal ruled Kumar had been unfairly dismissed and found the safety concerns he raised played a significant part in the decision to get rid of him. He was awarded 23000 pounds. Small price for silencing a problem.
The CQC is a legally designated Prescribed Person under whistleblowing law. That means it is officially supposed to be one of the safe places NHS staff can turn to when they are ignored everywhere else. A decade earlier the Mid Staffordshire Public Inquiry had already found the CQC harmed its own whistleblowers.
Same organisation. Same pattern. Just a different decade to be embarrassed in.
BMA council chair Philip Banfield @TheBMA said it is paramount doctors can raise safety concerns without fear of recrimination or backlash. The CQC's response was to say it accepted the findings and had learnt from the case. It always has learnt. It never seems to remember.
Kumar summed it up better than any regulator ever could. He said the whole energy of a few individuals in the CQC was spent gunning him down rather than focusing on patient safety. That is not a rogue department having a bad week. That is the watchdog eating the only person still doing its job.

Last year black infants had the highest rate of infant mortality at 7 per 1,000 births, followed by Pakistani infants at 5.2 per 1,000, more than twice the rate of white children at 3 per 1,000.
More children in the UK are dying in their first year of life than in almost all other European coutries. The @RCPCHtweets warns UK must do more to protect children's health:

It reminds me of when the deputy head of midwifery at the hospital that killed my baby responded to my question about training by saying she could "reassure" me that all staff involved in our care were fully compliant with training, incl on CTG.
They failed to properly interpret and escalate the CTG, resulting in the death of my baby, but were fully trained on exactly that? What is reassuring about here!?
She had to have the issue pointed out to her...

Catching up on the Maternity saga.
And found it incredibly painful & triggering
In a nutshell?
That is what the #NHS is now about.
Leadership cliques protecting each other.
Ignoring of lived experience
And performative hand wringing -when all are involved -in some capacity or the other.
It's also why nothing will change.
Especially if there is no desire to tackle the 'normal birth' ideology - whatever the cost.
I say so as someone who has faced this personally.
And a country which can't guarantee safe baby births? Doesn't provide good healthcare.

He isn’t the one sorting waiting lists, seeing patients
He is the one blocking training, encouraging Drs to leave & destroying the future
"NOBODY wants strikes in our NHS. Every time junior doctors walk out, it's patients who feel the impact — and other NHS staff left picking up the pieces."
@WesStreeting on how these strikes will mean delayed operations and families left waiting in pain.

ALT a senior shiba inu is bundled into a basket on the front of a blue bicycle. the bottom of the basket is wicker, but the top two-thirds is a wide wire mesh. the dog’s fluffy fur pokes through the squares of the wire, giving her back and booty the distinct appearance of a golden honey glazed ham. her front paws stick up over the top edge of the basket, and she’s looking forward toward the next adventure.

In 2006 there were 167,000 NHS England hospital beds
Now there are 130,000
In 2006 there were 33,000 GPs
Now there are 28,000
But sure, the problem is the “NHS model”, and sure, Reform’s insurance based model will sort it.
