Educational leadership conferences are largely a scam focused on vague platitudes and inspirational mumbo jumbo, when the average principal believes in a long list of bad ideas that include emphasizing anything but the instruction that will get kids to learn the material.

Yes, I keep a digital calendar, but every Sunday, I write out my meetings for the week. Before anything else, I always write ‘student achievement’—a reminder to stay focused despite competing priorities. As leaders, we must be relentless in our focus.

You can only usefully contribute to collaborative project work, and therefore develop that skill, when everyone involved has an appropriate base level of knowledge. Otherwise it’s the blind leading the blind. Time students have in front of an expert teacher is highly valuable.

Explicit instruction works. Education Schools Just Won’t Admit It.

“The tragedy of Project Follow Through is that nobody ever did follow through. The results were ignored by an educational establishment ideologically committed to the approaches the study had refuted, and a generation of American teachers was trained—as I was—to treat explicit instruction as something to avoid.” via @MrZachG aei.org/research-products/re…

Disappointing comment. You are playing down knowledge. Conceptual understanding, critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving are just pop slogans without knowledge underpinning them.

No-one is playing down knowledge. But playing up (in the current balance of things) conceptual understanding, critical thinking/literacy, creativity and multi-disciplainary problem solving.

The problem is that not every educator’s goal is actual student learning. It’s rarely stated outright, but it often drives poor instructional decisions.

Indeed. Students can’t “growth mindset” their way out of poor instruction.

Budgets and calendars don’t lie. If the priority is literacy but the master schedule, the coaching assignments, student support, and the spending look identical to three years ago, the priority is rhetorical. Focusing resources on the most important measure of success matters.

Consistency does not mean robotic teaching. It means students do not have to win the teacher lottery. A schoolwide literacy commitment should be visible from classroom to classroom. The goal is not sameness for adults; the goal is reliability for students
