Earlier this week, RUSI hosted The Iran Crisis Stocktake: Who Can Sustain the Pressure?
The US–Iran ceasefire has collapsed, there is no clear path back to the MoU signed this summer, and both sides claim control of the Strait of Hormuz—all amid speculation about a third round of hostilities.
I was joined by an excellent panel of experts: Ali Ansari (@aa51_ansari), Mohammed Al-Basha (@BashaReport and Jonathan Hackett (@jonathanhackett).

As tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf continue to escalate, RUSI’s briefing on the Iran Crisis Stocktake offers essential context on where this conflict stands and where it’s heading.

RUSI was pleased to partner with @CSIS and @UKinUSA yesterday for a conversation with UK Defence Secretary @wesstreeting (@DefenceHQ) on the future of US-UK defence cooperation.
As Europe rearms and transatlantic burden-sharing evolves, the discussion examined how London and Washington can keep deterrence credible.

Even worse, in practice it is not operating at speeds remotely near the new velocity restriction that suddenly came into effect last night.
“Starlink terminals used by Ukrainian drone units began experiencing signal failures at speeds above 160kph, disrupting several missions early on Wednesday morning, according to military personnel and senior Ukrainian officials.
‘Logistics at the frontline and middle strikes are badly limited,’ one senior Ukrainian official familiar with the situation on the front told the FT. Ukraine’s middle strikes target Russian military supply lines and logistics. The limitations came with ‘no warning, just in the middle of the night’, the official said.”

Being a great cultural institution the Imperial War Museum gets its share of brickbats - here's what I learned in eight years on the board markurban.substack.com/p/sec…
"Russia cannot simply build its way out of the problem through numerical expansion." New RUSI research by Dr Sidharth Kaushal finds Russia's nuclear modernisation will favour response speed and precision over mobility and arsenal size. It will see continued investment in silo-based systems, theatre-level strike capabilities, and counterspace tools, while mobile launchers and submarines see less growth, treated more as a retaliatory hedge than the centrepiece of deterrence.

Britain’s opposition Conservative Party has proposed building a new missile and drone defence system to protect the UK.
On 6 October the party posted on X : ‘Conservatives will invest up to £10 billion in Britannia Shield, a British ‘Iron Dome’-style system to protect the UK, our territories and bases overseas.’ It said the country had done too little against the ‘threat from missiles and drones’.
In July General Sir Richard Barrons, a Senior Consulting Fellow 9 (@CH_IntSecurity) one of the leaders of the UK’s 2025 Strategic Defence Review, gave evidence to the House of Commons Defence Committee about the likely cost of such a defence system.
The cost of a UK ‘Iron Dome’ would be 'entry level, probably £80 billion over 10 years’ he said, adding that the UK’s Defence Investment Plan falls far short, allocating only about £1 billion for integrated air and missile defence.

TL:DR ✨NEW PAPER✨ "Beyond 'Cyber' in Deterrence: A Multilevel Framework".
A framework for a whole-of-government approach to cyber deterrence, with 50+ tools to slow down, degrade, disrupt and deny malicious cyber activity. 🧵
W my colleague Gareth Mott.
Europe is fighting a hybrid war with a one-dimensional toolkit. Drones, sabotage and disinformation continue while responses stay largely cyber-only. Our new report by Dr Louise Marie Hurel and Dr Gareth Mott argues cyberattacks demand a broader statecraft response. It proposes a 52-tool framework spanning diplomatic, economic, military, intelligence and development instruments, sequenced to adversary behaviour rather than applied uniformly.

This is a brilliant piece of journalism - literally deconstructing the latest Russian strike drone, explaining how it works and where the components needed to make it work are being sourced by Russia, even after 4+ years of war
RFE/RL takes apart a Russian Geran-4 drone to uncover what makes the jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) faster, harder to intercept, and capable of operating deep inside Ukraine -- from its turbojet engine and advanced camera to foreign-made communications and navigation components. @cxemu @radiosvoboda

General Nick Perry DSO MBE 🇬🇧 assumes Command of Joint Force Command Norfolk.
Addressing the Command, Gen. Perry set out a clear focus for JFC Norfolk and NATO’s mission across the North Atlantic:
“The North Atlantic is once again a theatre of strategic competition. The assumptions many of us enjoyed for decades can no longer be taken for granted. That is why:
🔹Deterrence matters.
🔹Readiness matters.
🔹Warfighting matters.
And that is why this Command exists.
Our task is simple to describe, but demanding to deliver: to ensure NATO can deter aggression, defend the Alliance and, if deterrence fails, prevail in conflict alongside our Allies and partners.”

Important clarification. References to "intelligence" should be backed - as we saw with the UK's response to Salisbury and Ukraine - with evidence, otherwise it's just "vibes" and risks undermining trust.

Quick thoughts on the main claims in this piece about HMG's sanctions on illegal settlements (which people can support or oppose but still:)
The "pro-Arab, uncomfortable with Jews" characterisation by an unnamed source of FCDO/diplomatic culture doesn't hold up at all (and frankly deeply insulting) and shouldn't have gone unchallenged.
"MI6 warned against it" — piece admits MI6 never said "don't do it." Caution is their job; if they'd thought it wrong, they'd have said so plainly.
"Gulf states furious, pulling investment" — Gulf capital decisions track Iran risk, not Israel-Palestine. Hard to find a Gulf official who'd say otherwise.
"Gulf states depend on Israeli intel via MI6" — they don't; multiple routes exist.
"Ambassador gave an explicit warning" — diplomats pushing back on friction with their host country is standard. That's the job.
"Powell was sidelined" — no independent verification of his actual advice. Officials advise; policy doesn't always follow. Not unusual.
"This helped Netanyahu, proving the warning right" — doesn't hold up against Israeli press and polling.
"E1 was just an excuse, really about Holborn" — a line in the Israeli press, but between the E1 deadline and parliament sitting, there wasn't another real window.
"This will hurt intelligence sharing" — an ally cutting cooperation over a policy disagreement says more about that ally than about the policy. Also cuts both ways. Dubious anything will change.
MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service, did not give Burnham an emphatic ‘Don’t do it’ message, but it outlined that it could risk intelligence-sharing with Israel.
‘People in 6 are pulling their hair out,’ says an influential Labour figure close to the security services. ‘They presented warnings about the consequences of doing this.’
That source even suggests that Sa’ar only took Miliband’s call after a request was passed on by MI6 via Mossad. Netanyahu routinely refuses to talk to British politicians.
A non-political source with deep roots in the intelligence community has this to say: ‘If you appear like a lightweight who will selectively virtue-signal, you’re not going to be taken seriously again.’
He says that Mossad already views MI6 as competent but overcautious: ‘The relationship was difficult because we did national security, the Israelis do national survival. I think the Israelis see us as pretty professional, but a bunch of pussies in terms of the methods that we would use.’
