The sum will not add up. It is madness to rack our brains over this sum. But there is nothing else we can do except try to add up this sum.

yeah fair, I think the point is just that using their pay to recommend going into the trades is like using the pay of a partner at some Big Law firm to recommend going into law. that’s the top level, the vast majority of people never hit that kind of pay/responsibility

i don’t care about silver one way or the other really but i have never seen the critique take this form, it’s pretty much always just a general attack on the idea of poll aggregators/assigning probabilities to elections

why would the Germans have a higher domestic base of support in a Republican Spain that has spent the last few years purging its enemies? a handful of falangist maquis would be more domestic support than the massive organized collaborator groups available in Yugoslavia?

the “trickle down economics” argument never really made sense though. incentivizing production in one industry does actually increase supply of that one good. Supply-side economics fails because it leaps from that to “if we cut taxes on *everything*, we’ll spur general growth”

the analogies do seem to blow a hole in it though? nobody really argues that the farmer should be disenfranchised because he’s a single-issue voter for subsidies or that the autoworker should be disenfranchised because he has an interest in protectionism.

obviously it would be incorrect to say that this is true in all cases (the average Nazi in 1940 is not a Nazi because of his personal characteristics) but it is a kind of ideological formation that happens, and it’s one of the primary ones happening in the 21st century US

only if you a) interpret it maximally and b) believe that behaviors are somehow not materialist phenomena? obviously people are drawn to ideologies based on their individual impulses! obviously nations are drawn to ideologies based on their interests and desires!

Nathan For You does have jokes that are just "look at this guy" but it isn't the main feature of the show, that'd be the absurd sequences like "we need burner phones. i'll hire a guy on craiglists to buy phones and drop them in the water, where i'll be waiting in scuba gear"

day-to-day housing policy, local zoning and such, yeah, but the feds have historically played a huge role in housing policy. the urban renewal era and public housing towers, billions of dollars of federal money thrown around. that sort of interventionism could come back.

favorite passage is when they’re hunting the massive pod and they end up in the “eye” at the center, petting baby whales. they’re not automata, they’re fully capable of recognizing the beauty and majesty of the whale, they just also gotta clock in at the whale killing factory.

if it had been written in the 20th century it would have soured it with explicit, environmental era sympathy for the whale’s pain or regret for destroying part of the world’s beauty or w/e instead it’s a beautifully matter of fact depiction of working at the God Killing Factory

like I do sort of get it, it’d be weird to be in say, 1942 World War 2 and feel “euphoria” that the war’s turning around when millions are dying in horrific fashion- but i do think you can celebrate dodging the worst case scenario, even if things are still bad?

this doesn’t seem that unreasonable though? ever since 2021 the fear has been that “the next Trump” (which turned out to be literally Trump himself) would be able to competently consolidate power and do this shit forever, zero limits. instead he’s flaming out, deeply unpopular.

“as he fled and became a fugitive” how hard is it to read the full hundred words dumbass. do you seriously think the guy spent the rest of his life in hiding because he didn’t do it? excited for your meltdown. just two weeks to go!

The court records speak for themselves. Vivek Ramaswamy’s ad is disgusting—there is no lie, no scam, and no shameful act too low for him.

yeah this is just the mom lying some more, every other source says that the stepfather was charged, skipped bail and managed to avoid trial by fleeing the state.
