The article by @myldn below is providing misleading information because @TowerHamletsNow provided them with a misleading press release
The @ELAdvertiser also ran a misleading story
eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/n…
They are both based on this press release from the Council written 22nd October
towerhamlets.gov.uk/News_eve…
BUT that does not match the contents of the Cabinet report on the 21st October
democracy.towerhamlets.gov.u…
If you listen to the Cabinet meeting (more on this later) you can see why the Council press team might have been misled as the politicians were so self congratulatory
The Council news article implies a decision to acquire i.e. purchase four buildings on the Isle of Dogs for temporary accommodation. MyLondon wrote it as
London council buys 4 Canary Wharf offices to turn them into 180 flats for homeless people
This is misleading as in actuallity as per the Cabinet report:
- Its a 10 year lease deal with the building owner able to exit the lease after 5 years
- Its not the final Cabinet decision - Cabinet agreement was only to start work and "come back for approval once risks and negotiations are concluded." i.e. no agreement has been made to actually lease the buildings yet just to start work
To quote the Cabinet report
The proposed 10-year lease term is considered the best offer available to the Council and although the scheme would cost more than the current TA costs, in considering the report, the Council realises the anticipated operational and social benefits arising from the scheme.
The Council is being offered a ten-year lease by Thames Quay Properties II Limited. The lease includes a landlord-only break option exercisable on a rolling basis from year five onwards on not less than twelve months’ written notice and contains an upward-only rent review at year five.
8.4 The lease will be contracted out of the security of tenure provisions of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. As a consequence, the Council will have no statutory right to renew the lease at the expiry of the contractual term and vacant possession may be required at the end of the lease period.
Delegate authority to the Corporate Director of Housing & Regeneration, in consultation with the Mayor, to conclude preliminary negotiations, obtain an independent rental valuation, agree the final lease terms, and take all necessary steps to complete the transaction and to come back for approval once risks and negotiations are concluded.
I submitted a complaint to the Council and emailed the two reporters so that they are aware
My complaint said
Misleading information provided on news article Tower Hamlets to secure 180 new family homes for temporary accommodatio

Tower Hamlets to secure 180 new family homes for temporary accommodation
Tower Hamlets Council is set to increase its supply of local temporary accommodation by acquiring four office buildings in Marsh Wall, Canary Wharf, to convert into family homes.
Cabinet approved the proposal to acquire buildings at 191, 193, 195 and 197 Marsh Wall on Wednesday 21 October, with the intention of converting the units into temporary accommodation for local families. Plans would deliver approximately 180 homes, including 167 two-bedroom and 13 three-bedroom homes.

Good to be at this meeting yesterday. The Parks Team is working hard, but its outrageous that £ millions are being raised from events and yet almost nothing is spent on it. Hopefully the new committee will be able to secure some investment in sports pitches, facilities + planting
Looking forward to the AGM for the 'Friends of Victoria Park' on Saturday morning. If you use the park regularly or live in Tower Hamlets / Hackney and care for its future, please come along to have your say and hear what you can do to help protect and enhance it. #ThePeoplesPark

Everyone deserves a safe, secure home they can be proud of.
Today I visited @Shelter to hear directly from their team and social housing campaigners about how we can deliver a new generation of council homes.
As we strengthen the Social Housing Bill, we’re putting tenants at the heart of those changes, from protecting survivors of domestic abuse in social housing to giving council tenants more control over repairs and maintenance.
Because delivering a new generation of social housing isn’t just about building more homes. It’s about making sure they’re safe, secure and shaped by the people who live in them.

Exclusive: Over a dozen charities have written to Chancellor John Healey demanding an end to the housing benefit freeze at next week's Budget.
They say: "Unfreezing LHA would also give millions of low-income private renters some much needed breathing space."
Some of the charities that signed the letter are set to attend a pre-Budget homelessness summit in No10 in coming days.
Andy Burnham called for an end to the freeze while mayor of Greater Manchester.

Just been speaking to yet another resident denied the renewal of their disabled son's Blue Badge by Tower Hamlets Council, despite having had one for the past 20 years + a 'lifetime award' of highest rate of PIP. The @LGOmbudsman should investigate this systemic maladministration
Really frustrating to speak to several more older residents lately whose attempts to renew their Blue Badge have been blocked by Tower Hamlets Council's maladministration despite us being told the process was being fixed. Thanks to @TH_Labour's @DavidJEdgar for following these up

My letter to @WestminsterXtra about Tory plans to cut council tax support for the poorest families in Westminster. Targeting vulnerable people as a cost-cutting exercise is just cruel.
Once again the Conservatives are targeting the most vulnerable with plans to cut council tax support, says @FionaParker66 in @WestminsterXtra

I agree with this critique of the Right to Buy, but the truth is that from 1980s, councils were denied borrowing powers or using capital receipts from sales to replace the homes sold. Worse still, it wasn't until 2007 that funding was restored and it was then cut again in 2010

Worth recalling the WSJ exclusive largely repeats this earlier Telegraph story. Both report Musk sought and secured Trump’s agreement to slow Starlink. Excellent piece here by @PeteApps exposing the problems heat networks. As a local councillor I received numerous complaints about these systems malfunctioning and then costs rocketing after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The housing associations were rarely willing or able to help
Imagine paying for heating when just 15-35% of the energy reaches your home.
Residents in buildings using heat networks still pay for the waste, and they have no energy price cap to protect them.
