Restoring the JCPOA would not resolve the underlying issue of Iran’s past nuclear weapons work. It would, however, prevent Iran from being able to dash for a weapon now. al-monitor.com/originals/202…

In dark moments like these, I am reminded of Mike Elleman, a colleague at @IISS_org who passed away way too soon. Mike was the greatest missile expert, and he taught me (a complete amateur in defence matters) a lot about missiles, missile defence and UAVs. Mike was much more than this, a nice man with the biggest heart ever. He would be studying tonight's attacks with "a cool head and a warm heart", able to analyse and explain complex technical matters in simple ways all while remembering the people suffering in the war. We miss you, Mike. For more, @MarkTFitz wrote this moving tribute iiss.org/online-analysis/onl…

Thank goodness the USG got @sianamazi and four other Amcit hostages out of Iran before the Hamas attack put diplomacy out of reach.

And anyone who claims the release of frozen Iranian assets abetted the attack is propagandizing.

The right choice at the right time. #WomenLifeFreedom
#Iran's future will be decided by its people and only its people. Kudos to brave Iranians who carry the torch on the ground, despite efforts by others to hijack their struggle.

I've tried to keep an open mind about this story but this rebuttal and the others I've read are far far more persuasive the accusations themselves.
As @CrisisGroup's head of MENA, I have a pretty good understanding of what we publish, how we conduct research and how our findings are received, including on the Iran file. This @nytopinion piece by Bret Stephens is shamefully inaccurate: 1/

I don’t focus much on Iran in my work but Dina was a colleague when I worked at the IISS in London. The attacks against her are ridiculous. She’s a great analyst. Disagreeing with her conclusions or recommendations is fine. Questioning her integrity or spreading falsehoods isn’t.
I’m dismayed and disappointed by the mischaracterisations, falsehoods and character assassination campaign targeting me and colleagues. I’m also dismayed that subsequent outlets chose to run the story without seeking our views or ignoring them. Here are a few facts - 🧵:

Exactly. Contradictions and hypocrisy don’t matter when one is engaged in a hit job.
This is a key point. People who distrust everything about Iran's government are now taking the government's internal spin as gospel. They're using that to malign a group of independent researchers, like my colleagues @DEsfandiary & @AliVaez.

Replying to @DEsfandiary
8. I cannot be held responsible for how officials present this among themselves. We are aware that officials of certain countries spin their meetings with analysts to highlight their influence. This happens in Iran, in the Middle East, and many other countries in the world.

A must-read for anyone who came across the campaign against @AliVaez and his colleagues and mistakenly thought there was any truth to the smear.

“Ta’arouf” was also the explanation that came to my mind. I hesitated to put it out there though, lest I be seen as pretending to be a cultural expert. @hmajd is such an expert.
emails that Iran hawks claim are "proof" of guilt show their ignorance of Persian culture and the practice of "ta'arouf": people will flatter each other endlessly, including in emails. Look it up. @AliVaez et al are guilty of nothing other than ta'arouf.

Interesting timing. If the smear story was ready a month ago, was the intention to derail the hostage release and diplomatic progress with Iran?
heard something interesting about how the story that smeared the Iranian American analysts got shopped to Semafor. Apparently a Trump/Pompeo aide was the one shopping it around for about a month.
