This El Niño has now set ocean temperature records for 150+ days straight.
Average temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean have reached 86.4°F (30.2°C), while maximum temperatures have climbed to 88.8°F (31.6°C).
But this El Niño is about more than just numbers 🧵
Ratificado e reconhecido internacionalmente, inclusive por uma organização baseada nos EUA.
It's over.

What really stands out to me here is how shear never got at all favorable, even at peak. 1997 and 2015 both dipped down to near average briefly in September, but this year basically had June-level shear or more for the entire season. Just a complete wipeout over the MDR.
Several factors made this Atlantic hurricane season one of the least active on record but one in particular stands out. Wind shear wasn't just high, it was record-shattering high. Today's newsletter is packed with all the details ⬇️

"But the El Niño peaked..."
ENSO Regions 3 (+4.3C) and 3.4 (+3.4C) set new all-time weekly records. #ElNiño
SOI is rising... while ALL the Niño regions are rocketing upwards... And there's people saying that it peaked. Cool joke bro. This not only shows an incredible coupled event, but also so East based that the usual measurement can't properly keep up.
#ElNiño
Imagine being this dumb to think this Super El Niño already peaked, when just now we're getting the Bjerknes Feedback Loop... Couldn't be me.
It's all or nothing now for this event, as we approach the usual high end period. The 3 main regions are all spiking up, firing on all cylinders for a historic peak.

There’s a debate in the meteorology/ climate community about how to visualize the 2026 El Niño. One method subtracts recent tropical ocean warming mainly due to climate change (relative RONI index) and one that simply visualizes the event with no correction.
So how does 2026’s El Niño compare with 1997 after accounting for warmer tropical oceans? Bottom line: 2026 is still significantly stronger than 1997.
For these October 14–20 maps, a RONI-style adjustment subtracts the tropical-average SST anomaly: 0.29°C in 1997 and 1.14°C in 2026.
Niño 3.4 changes from:
• 1997: +2.13°C → +1.85°C
• 2026: +3.34°C → +2.21°C
2026 remains warmer but its lead shrinks from 1.21°C to 0.36°C after adjusting for tropical-ocean warmth.
