The Dichotomy of Control: True Open Systems Amidst Externality Preference and the Risk of Fear This post is in honor of and advocacy for freeing @keonne and @SamouraiDev developers of @SamouraiWallet, an open source Bitcoin wallet that allows users to perform collaborative transactions with fellow anonymous users to privately use bitcoin. I believe your gut response to what I just described is the civilizational scale of which way humanity trends next. If you lean towards pearl clutching, consider this post carefully.

Samourai users held their own keys. The founders went to prison. Rafael Yakobi explains why that distinction matters in E005.

Replying to @Rothmus
Those who are opposed to corporations and favor government do not realize that government is simply the largest, most monopolistic corporation of all and it has a monopoly on violence.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and thank you LPNH for the lovely flowers. The last few days have been rough. I've been helping my mother with father's funeral arrangements and pondering how I can best honor his legacy. He worked in ministry his entire life, with over 20 years spent helping to spread the gospel in communist countries. Truly an inspiration.

Keonne Rodriguez (@keonne) is serving five years in federal prison. William Hill is serving four. They helped build Samourai, a Bitcoin privacy tool. #FreeSamourai Building privacy technology shouldn't mean developers and their families have to live in fear for innovating. We haven't forgotten Keonne, Bill, or their families, including Lauren (@leamuirleyn), who continues to advocate for Keonne. Read Keonne's story and learn more about the clemency campaign: change.org/p/stand-up-for-fr…

I recently said something out loud that I realized was true only after I said it. Why do I care about #FreeSamourai more than about my own business @BTCMedusa? Because the fight to #PardonSamourai matters more than my startup succeeding. In America, we are meant to have the right to TRY to build. And we may fail. @SamouraiWallet was persecuted because they succeeded. Their success is privacy's success. Their mission is my mission. I want to build useful tools, and I hope to build a viable and profitable business. But that freedom matters more: the freedom to build, to strive, to fail, to fix, to fail again, and to keep going. Because eventually, if we preserve that freedom, some of us will build the tools that create a better future — one where privacy remains a value worth defending. #FreeSamourai #PardonSamourai

⚖️Two-tiered Justice: 9 major banks, trillions of dollars in custody, clear guidelines repeatedly violated. 👉 Zero days in prison for anyone. Building a noncustodial, open-source Bitcoin wallet, following the guidelines (with regulators recognition). 👉 5 years in federal prison. #FreeSamourai
BANKS ARE THE BIGGEST MONEY LAUNDERERS ON THE PLANET. JPMORGAN TOLD THE SENATE IT'S SOMEONE ELSE. Not one of their CEOs went to prison. In 2020, 2,100 leaked bank reports showed the banks themselves flagging over $2 trillion in suspicious money between 1999 and 2017. They moved it anyway. Here's what they've owned up to. TD Bank left 92% of its transactions unmonitored for six years. $18.3 trillion. Pleaded guilty. Wachovia, now Wells Fargo, failed to monitor $420 billion from Mexican currency exchanges. Fine: $160 million. About $200 billion ran through a single Danske Bank branch in Estonia, much of it suspicious. Pleaded guilty. BNP Paribas moved $8.8 billion for Sudan, Iran and Cuba. Pleaded guilty. Standard Chartered was accused of hiding $250 billion in Iran deals from New York regulators. Settled. Deutsche Bank let $10 billion slip out of Russia through "mirror trades". HSBC moved at least $881 million in drug money. JPMorgan kept Jeffrey Epstein as a client until 2013, five years after his conviction. It reported over $1 billion of his transactions as suspicious. A month after he died. And this Tuesday, Bank of America admitted it willfully broke anti-money laundering law. Over $5 billion in suspicious transactions it didn't report on time. Treasury says it "prioritized its revenues." Fine: $1.2 billion. Profit that quarter: $6.9 billion. The US Attorney General said it out loud in 2013. Some banks are so big "it does become difficult to prosecute them." That's Jamie Dimon in the video, at the Senate in 2023. Watch who he blames. Deposit more than $10,000 in cash and your bank reports you to the government. Let $18.3 trillion go unchecked and you get a fine. Two sets of rules. Guess which one you're on.
