Ralph Hooper, 1926-2022, designer of the Harrier.
He was the first aircraft designer I ever met, and Britain's greatest ever one. RIP. #Harrier

The launch event for my book Jump Jet, with @MRWeatherburn @imperialcollege, is now up.
The limits of AI, @elonmusk's jump jet design and much more. It was a fun day.

Happy not your actual birthday to the Hurricane.

1/3. Yesterday was the 90th anniversary of the Hawker Hurricane's first flight.
Only it wasn't.
New archive discoveries by volunteers @BrooklandsMuseu show it flew on the 5th of November, not the 6th.
The prototype Hurricane flew after taxi trials. Sydney Camm was furious.
A reminder that it was really yesterday.

Waking up this morning in Atlanta, I’m appalled by what has unfolded since my original post about the shocking audio from the Learjet 60 crash in Florida yesterday.
Missile strikes. DEI conspiracies. People inventing increasingly ludicrous explanations and presenting them as fact while investigators are barely beginning their work. The ignorance is staggering.
But it’s the treatment of this young co-pilot, including by people purporting to be aviation professionals, that I find utterly sickening. Her gender, her fear and her final words have become ammunition for misogyny and ridicule. That’s wrong on so many levels.
I hear a pilot facing something that would terrify any of us, still communicating with air traffic control until the final moments. Thousands of hours in a logbook, or our gender, don’t make us immune to fear, nor allow us to understand everything happening in that cockpit from a few radio calls.
And now, even the measured voices asking for evidence, patience and compassion are themselves receiving hate. What has this platform become when even asking for basic human decency invites abuse.
I expect better from our profession and humans in general. Seeing people who should know better join this grotesque pile-on leaves me deeply disappointed and disgusted.
My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of everyone lost. Behind every headline and recording are people whose lives have been shattered. They deserve compassion, dignity and answers. Not this.

Happy Birthday to the Harrier!
On 21st October 1960 Bill Bedford, one leg in plaster after a car crash, climbed into Hawker P.1127 XP831 at Dunsfold, pushed the throttle, and made history.

🇮🇹 Nice shot showing an Italian Air Force F-35B Lightning II and a pair of Italian Navy AV-8B Harrier II+ aircraft flying in formation past the carrier Cavour during exercise Neptune Strike 26.

Part of the Harrier was designed in the same place the new @Tesla Roadster was.
@elonmusk even wants to fly a proper supersonic jump jet. Maybe that's next?
Read about it in my book. Free sample on Amazon: amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GX3226B5
