The Lula regime is now going around seizing the passports of every major figure associated with the political party that beat him in the general election 3 weeks ago.

Beijing will eventually take control of German and other foreign operations inside China, and the groundwork is already visible. The 2021 Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law gives the state legal cover to retaliate against foreign firms, exit bans have trapped foreign staff, and the 2023 counter-espionage raids on consultancies like Mintz and Bain showed how fast a business can be pressured when relations sour. Volkswagen, BASF, Siemens and Mercedes have tens of billions of euros of plant, tooling and process knowledge sitting inside Chinese borders, and none of it is portable.
Railways show where this ends. China's high-speed fleet was built on technology transfer from Kawasaki (CRH2, a Shinkansen derivative), Siemens (CRH3, the Velaro), Alstom and Bombardier, the price of access to the Chinese market. The state then merged the pieces into CRRC, which now bids against its own teachers. It beat Japan for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed line in 2015 and has built or supplied rail across Laos, Kenya and Ethiopia, usually on Chinese state financing that Siemens and Kawasaki can't match.
Machine tools, power equipment, autos and chemicals follow the same sequence. Foreign firms bring the know-how in, Chinese firms absorb it, and the foreign firms are squeezed out of their own plants. German exporters lose the Chinese market first, then the markets they once sold into around it.

Brazil Election Chaos Cheat Sheet:
• Brazil provides free busing to and from voting centers
• In order to be deemed neutral, those buses are not allowed to have any political signs, etc
• In several states that skew toward Lula, the buses had "PT" stars affixed to them (PT is Lula's party). The official in charge of busing said those buses could not run unless the signs were taken down, delaying the busing. Lots of finger-pointing ensued
• There is an election tribunal in Brazil that oversees election legal issues, but Lula went around it and appealed directly to the Supreme Court
• The SC assigns a single justice to review; Lula asked for an extension specifically IN THOSE STATES (which heavily skew toward Lula)
• The Justice who made the decision was previously Lula's PERSONAL LAWYER and is a Lula appointee
• Once Bolsonaro knew Lula was asking for extensions and suspected it would be granted (given which justice was reviewing), he also requested extensions so they would be nationwide, and not just in Lula territory
• A nationwide extension was granted just AFTER the polling stations were supposed to close (5:00pm). However, once a voting machine is locked for the day, it cannot be unlocked. In practice, this meant most polling stations were not able to reopen and offer extended voting because they'd closed at 5pm
• By an AMAZING coincidence, nearly all of the voting machines that hadn't yet locked were in the four states where Lula polls well over 70% popularity (northeast)
• There are supposed to be two observers (one from each side) at all polling stations. At many of the extended stations, the word is there were not two observers
• In the first round voting (three weeks ago), Bolsonaro won 47% and Lula 45% of 119mm votes, with ~8% to third-party candidates
• Of the 8%, the candidates skewed strongly to the right (Bolsonaro); everyone assumed Bolsonaro would take the large majority of that 8% and win easily in round two (yesterday)
• As it turned out, Lula "outperformed" in basically every state
• Also, apparently 5 million more people voted in round two (yesterday) than in round one
• Lula picked up 10.5mm votes, whereas Bolsonaro picked up 3.7mm, leading to tremendous suspicion, as 3.7mm isn't even the majority of the 8% right-leaning opportunity from round one, and implies Bolsonaro received 0% of the incremental 5 million votes and less than half of the jump ball votes
• Chaos ensues. The $EWZ Brazil index ETF has been down as much as 28% this morning (mix of currency and index declines)
Trump should pull it off the table.
The Canadians never intended to sign anything. Their plan is to wait for the next president to cave and give them whatever they want.
Brasilian politics, which even before this election would resemble American politics if it brushed its teeth with cachaça, has been kicked into another level.
The Lula government has gone after Flavio & his father.
Turning your political enemies into martyrs ends poorly.
Yup
If, by the way, the same situation that just happened in Brazil had happened but with the parties switched -- if Bolsonaro had won last night's election and then a pro-Bolsonaro judge sent the Federal Police to seize Lula's passport and bar him from leaving the country -- every major western media outlet and liberal NGOs would be screaming about the authoritarian attack on Brazil's elections and the destruction of basic freedoms.

Behold the great meme war between the Turks 🇹🇷 and Chinese 🇨🇳 which has been brewing now for 3 days!
It began with a small Turkish account posting a meme of a cat wearing a straw hat + slitty eyes + wispy moustache. A Chinese user then replied with a meme of Patrick Star from SpongeBob parachuting next to the Turkish flag, with a caption along the lines of “I heard the Turkish flag was designed like this, is that true? Both were from small anonymous accounts but now has been viewed by several millions.
Turks took it as mockery of a national symbol and all hell breaks lose.
The broader historical and cultural pile-on on both sides were equally impressive in its deep knowledge of Ottoman / Chinese history, along with very creative vulgarity. I read one Chinese tweet calling Turkey the fleshlight of the entire world. Both sides insulted each other as “might as well be Indians.” Then it got super testy when it ventured into Turkestan/Xinjiang/Uyghur territory, and soon out came digs about the Turkish lira, China virus and other general nationalist trash talk.
The next stage was the free speech Olympics. Turks started posting images of Xi Jinping and daring Chinese users to criticize him to prove that China is “free.” Chinese replies often flipped it to “you criticize Xi but none of you dare criticize Muhammad.” When no Chinese account could criticize Xi, the Turks concluded they were all bots.
The latest stage has been the international expansion.
Japan + Taiwan + Azerbaijan + Spain lined up with Turks against China.
Japanese accounts were the most visible contingent. Taiwan joined the Turkish side for obvious reasons. Azerbaijan was in Turkic solidarity mode. South Korea and Spain too for reasons which are not clear to me.
Iran + Greece + India + Egypt joined up with the Chinese against Turkey.
I saw an Iranian account openly telling the Chinese to keep going and “discipline the Turks” because the Ottoman/Persian rivalry runs deep still. Greece obviously went against the Turks and as for India, who knows. Could’ve gone either way but they chose the Chinese.
The whole thing, while viscous and passionate at times, has strangely left me with the warm fuzzies. Imagine how much more boring life would’ve been without @X’s auto-translate feature

How would you classify that ?
🚨 MAJOR BREAKING: The US Embassy in Ottawa has issued an official fact sheet accusing Carney's government of INTERFERING IN AMERICAN ELECTIONS.
It quotes Melanie Joly five times.
It names Doug Ford.
It names a Liberal MP who campaigned in Florida.
Days earlier, Carney and Joly both SWORE Canada would never interfere in another country's elections.
The US just put the receipts on letterhead.
It ends: "Americans decide America's elections."
This is insane.
THE LIBERALS ARE INTERFERING IN US POLITICS.
