Hello, friends and listeners! For anyone who has enjoyed listening to the #ConceptuallySpeaking podcast, I’d love it if you became a supporter of the show. My main goal is to just be self-sufficient, so any amount helps. Thanks in advance! 🙌⤵️

Very disappointing to see education folks burning their credibility like this. Notable, too, how many of them were sharply critical of virtual during COVID but now think a AI education is the future.

Trevor Aleo and Nick Covington (Becoming Literary) discuss Sold a Story Season 2's first episodes on Zig Engelmann and Direct Instruction. They like Engelmann's teaching but worry his method is being oversold as a one-size-fits-all fix, criticize the podcast's "true crime" style framing of villains vs. victims, and argue journalist Emily Hanford oversimplifies education research to push policy. trevoraleo.substack.com/p/in…

Regrettable and strange to see people using OECD metrics to champion Govean/Birbalsinghian education, an incredibly poor, partial way to appraise a current system that most participants view as narrow, exam/metric-obsessed & joyless, despite the best efforts of humane teachers
Correct, the left needs to admit that Gove's school reforms worked and @daisychristo has written a brilliant piece for @ArguablyMag on that today. arguably.uk/p/labour-shouldn…
Too true! Observing stuff, asking questions, and doing experiments is a waste of time that bears no resemblance to science. Much better for children to work on changing their long term memory through mini-whiteboard quizzes.
.@adamboxer1 was, very likely, doing it wrong 😑

Brother Doug once drove a truck for a living (there's something you know nothing about) which uniquely qualifies him to tell you how to teach. Only Trucker Doug knows the truth.
✏️ Doug calls it active observation. I call it quality control. It's one of the best routines for math teachers to use.
Doug Lemov explains how to make active obersvation work.

This explanation by @MrAleoSays is a good example of how efficiency in building knowledge by just telling them through explicit instruction isn't always best.
Sometimes methods that are inefficient for pure knowledge building are preferable because they match the outcomes.
Aleo's approach centers cultivating students' interpretive abilities through practices like noticing, puzzling, and theorizing. He models these for cognitive apprenticeship, empowering students to construct textual meanings.

New post is live! This week I’m diving into how I frame and teach interpretation to my Ss. Turns out I have a lot to say, so I had to split it into two posts.

People want you to think reading is a privilege because then it is much easier to have ire for those who do read. Thus reading becomes an ‘elitist’ way of knowing the world.

Successfully defended my dissertation on Friday surrounded by friends, family, and scholars I admire! It has been an adventure, but this is just the first step in a much longer journey. Very excited to share what's next for aesthetic #literacies soon! 👀

As someone who thinks a lot about ways to teach both rhetoric and critical media #literacies in secondary spaces, this is a very useful visual.
We need more structural critique/sensemaking of these dynamics and less moralizing/handwringing about mis/dis-information.
This maps onto Walter Ong’s work pretty well. Lots of good food for thought here.
Social media basically brought us to something like an oral culture:
- We're not illiterate in the sense that we can't read, our writing approximates our speaking
- Our writing isn't as complex because it doesn't function like text used to
- We both archive everything and trust our collective memory -- everything is saved, bookmarked, etc. but never revisited (when was the last time you bookmarked a website or even checked your own likes?)
- For information to be remembered it has to be recirculated, repeated, or go viral or we forget because time moves so fast (similar to storytelling?)
- You can't look things up easily because we live in a perpetual now -- if you don't understand the context of the discourse, you need to ask someone to catch you up
- This also makes society very participatory
- This has weird knock-on effects like needing to *always* be online to know what's going on in the world - you can't just hermit away and study, at a minimum you're lurking
- Because of the way the Internet treats time, when we do revisit the past, it's marked by events vs. actual moments in time - do you remember 2017 or what was meme-worthy then?
- There's always a current thing
- Language evolves quickly; things feel dated quickly
- We determine if things are truthfulness through vibes/tribal consensus - there are authorities but they're cults of personality vs. institutions
- You can't "just learn" things, you need to be in the right networks
- Memes, copypastas, etc. are very similar to oral cultures
- I actually don't know if any of this is right so feel free to correct me
