RACING REVIEW
The miserable bastards (our staple audience, granted) tell us everyone fast-forwards this section so we will drop it this week (even though it often contains three or four sections that could be topics in their own right, so the impatient ones like The Computer Kid have been missing out)
TOPICS
1.Budget Chat Mk 247 â Our resident Mathematical genius points out to The Times the difference between a 5pc and 25pc rise in MGD, while confidently predicting punting Armageddon on Wednesday afternoon (Budget speech is due to kick off around 12.30pm)
2.Brazil Whacks Gambling â Lula, who banned gambling last month, wins the Brazil election on Sunday night â so it could have been a wise move for Flutter to close its Betfair operation in Brazil last week (this was a Next IO exclusive last week)
3.The Brazil news was in addition to Flutter announcing 1,400 job losses across the board last week
a.IGaming Republic breaks down job cuts by area (Leeds 450+; Clui-Napuca 300; Dublin 240; 50 Malta 50 â other potential areas include Porto; Gibraltar; London and Sunderland.
Sunderland?
Have Flutter got a car plant?
b.Are Paddy Power losses bad news for their plethora of Racing Ambassadors and the Sporting Life website and Timeform and indeed other editorial?
c.PP ambassador Ruby Walsh has another tricky subject to cover in his RP column after Final Demand, with the Flutter announcement
4.We hear another big bookmaking group are set to announce losses in their Risk/Trading areas - the hits just keep coming
This is not related in any way to the Betfair odds-compiler tasked with pricing up Corner markets last weekendâŚ..
5.Three sentenced for General Election betting offences â what one of our number said âpersonally I think it is a disgrace but I canât say it on the podâ? (whether they meant it was a disgrace that all sentences were suspended or they shouldnât have been found guilty in the first place is unclear)
6.Gary Wiltshire changes his pitches from BresBet to BellyBet â you missed an opportunity there Gal, in not going with BellyUpBetâŚ.
7.BetGoodwin eyes up ÂŁ80m potential stock market listing â they must have saved a bit by reining back on horse racing sponsorship in November 2025 thenâŚ
8.Ex-athletes, ex-sportsbook trader charged in hoops fixing plot â according to Nevada court documents
9. George Cottrell and Tether Bet and Curacao latest â The Times follow-up
10. What is the latest on their new BHA admin website, which began in July 2021, and was initially set for launch in 2024? â indeed do the BHA have to embrace modern day technology a lot more, across all aspects of their operations, in this technical day and age (trials, appeals etc)?
11.Should the sport be worried about yet another winner weighing in light and being DQd? â it was always a big fear at Betfair back in the day, as itâs a guaranteed winner in pre-race and in-running markets if it was ever done intentionally (certainly not suggesting this latest example was)
12.The BHAâs latest podcast â Racingâs Diverse Future
13. New BHA chairman Simon Coxâs profile in media continues to rise after given more interviews â is this at the expense of the longstanding BHA leadership teams and does it undermine their importance? Is the chairman more important than the CEO?
14.RP further goes into Kia Jorabachiaanâs good books, no doubt, as Peter Scargill runs the rule over Amo Racingâs published latest finances
Harry advises Anthony to keep it factualâŚ

Our iron horse Tarbat Ness equals his motherâs record of 7 wins for the stable. Since resuming racing on 28 Oct last year heâs run 16 times for 5 wins with @GinaMangan7 and 4 places. A credit to his trainer @JohnWathenBerry. Proud to be his co-owner-breeder with @LawrenceWadey.

đĽWATCH THIS: Kaveh Solhekol absolutely TORCHED Jim Ratcliffe on @SkySportsNews! Heâs to blame. Full stop.
Solhekol didnât hedge or soft-soap it. He laid out exactly how Ratcliffeâs arrival, buying only 29%, bailing out the Glazers, and seizing control of football operations, has wrecked the club.
He was ruthless in his assessment:
âIâm going to tell you whoâs to blame for this situation at the moment. The person to blame is Jim Ratcliffe. He bought the club almost three years ago. He bought 29% of it, when the Glazer family put the club up for sale. He didnât buy the whole club, he only bought 29% of it. And by buying 29%, it meant that the Glazers stayed in place and Jim Ratcliffe got to run the football operations.â
Thatâs the original sin. He didnât clean house. He just propped up the Glazers.
Then the arrogance of the man who thought he knew better:
âHeâs come in and he said, âI know better than anyone else how to run this club. Weâre going to do things my wayâ. And look what itâs turned out to be over the past two and a half years.â
The managerial mess followed immediately:
âFirst of all, he said, âIâm going to back Erik ten Hag. Weâve been chopping and changing managers too muchâ. Then he went off and started meeting Thomas Tuchel and any other manager who was available behind Erik ten Hagâs back.â
âWhen they couldnât find somebody else, they gave Ten Hag a new contract and money to spend. A couple of games later, Ten Hag loses his job.â
âIn the middle of the season, they beg Ruben Amorim to come to United. He doesnât even want to go there in the middle of the season, he wants to wait until the summer. They pay a fortune to get him, even though he plays three at the back, a totally different kind of football.â
âDan Ashworth doesnât want him. Dan Ashworth leaves, Ruben Amorim comes in, they go all in on Ruben Amorim. That doesnât work out. They get rid of him.â
âThey bring in Carrick as an interim. Okay, results are better. Then they give him the full-time job.â
And then the transfer policy that locked the club into mediocrity:
âIn the meantime, Ratcliffe has come in and said, âWeâre going to do things my way. No player is going to get paid 250, 300 grand a week here anymore. Thatâs not going to happen. Weâre not going to sign any players for more than 60, 70 million poundsâ.â
ââSo Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson, Harry Kane, Declan Rice, all these players, we ainât going to be signing them. And also, weâre only going to be signing players with Premier League experience. And weâre going to sign forwards one window, then the following summer weâre just going to sign midfielders, then next summer weâre just going to sign defendersâ.â
âSo this is Jim Ratcliffeâs way of doing things. So he is to blame for this situation.â
Heâs right. Ratcliffe rode in as the saviour and has made things measurably worse. It was a mistake from the start and I said so at the time. It was NEVER going to work. The only people who benefited were the Glazers. Iâm still surprised so many fans backed this and thought it could succeed.
Kaveh just laid bare how damaging Ratcliffe has been for Manchester United. And unfortunately, thereâs no end in sight.
