Because the traits you select for which are beneficial today might turn into a detriment in the future as the conditions you don't control suddenly change. A diversity of traits safeguards against this.
The selected traits might also lead to an unsustainable drift in expectations. If everyone started genetically modifying their children so they would all grow to be six feet tall, then sexual selection would decide six feet isn't tall enough because it's now the average. People would then start modifying their children to be taller and taller until it has negative effects on their health and quality of life.
This is exactly what we've done to dogs.

When Tolkien wrote the Lord of The Rings, one of his goals was to create an Iliad or Aeneid for the English people. A foundational body of myth and legend.
The closest American writers have come to that are Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and Moby-Dick by Herman Melville.
Reading Blood Meridian. I wonder if there will ever be an author like Cormac McCarthy again, or if we’ve seen the last of the truly great writers. Every sentence he composes is art, like a painting. You see and feel what he’s trying to convey. He wrestles with big things, the human condition, good and evil. He doesn’t give you answers but he leaves you with a lot to think about. An absolute master of his craft. Not the last, I hope, but I don’t know.

Today, 19 September 2026, the blood of Saint Januarius (San Gennaro) did liquefy in Naples Cathedral.
The official announcement came at 10:04 a.m. from Monsignor Vincenzo De Gregorio, Abbot of the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro.
He said the saint had given “the sign of his presence in our community. The blood has liquefied.”
The congregation responded with long applause and the traditional waving of white handkerchiefs. Archbishop Mimmo Battaglia then displayed the ampoule to the faithful.
Saint Januarius, courageous witness of Christ, strengthen our faith and protect us in times of trial
Prayer ;
Saint Januarius, you laid down your life for your faith after being arrested for charitably visiting your friends in prison. Your love is inspiring, as is your courage. Please pray for me, that I will find great inspiration in your witness and seek to imitate your selflessness and courage in my own life.
Amen
St. Januarius ,pray for us.
Jesus, I trust in You

If you are disappointed (putting it mildly) in the present Church hierarchy, pray to Bl. Karl (emperorcharles.org/prayers), who was betrayed by a great many - though far from all - of the Bishops of Austria-Hungary. In this, as in so much else, he has been though a lot of we are going through, only worse!

theres an entire supra-legal system that parents have to deal with that no one else has any idea about. no one talks about it because you sound absolutely psychotic. if you manage to explain it, they just think you're describing a fluke one in a million case. they have no idea.

people have this odd fetishized idea that no one “had childhoods” before a certain point in history. it seems loadbearing for them as some stab at modern people, but it’s completely untrue. im reading a children’s book from 1910 right now. if anything the kids were more childlike
John Mulaney says Michael Jackson wasn’t unique for having no childhood because nobody born before 1910 had one
John: “People always go, ‘Oh, poor Michael Jackson, he had no childhood.’ But you know who else didn’t? Anyone born before 1910”
“And they didn’t marry children with a giraffe as a witness... it’s a pretty sacred cow in comedy to not go after it”
Conan: “We now know why John was not asked to give the eulogy at Michael Jackson’s funeral”
John: “I had a nice version. I was perfectly willing to call an audible and switch it on the fly”
Robespierre was counting on a popular riot to save him from the guillotine. But his supporters declined to show up because it was raining heavily, so they stayed inside and drank while he got the chop. This prompted one wit to comment "rain is counter-revolutionary."
This reminds me of when Jordan Peterson first became famous. Huge numbers of college students would show up to his speeches to yell, disrupt, pull fire alarms and block entrances.
So he started doing his speeches at 7am. Then unsurprisingly, no protesters showed up because, apparently the communist Revolution that would save world wasn't worth getting about of bed early for, lmao

Julian the Apostate, a pagan, complained about the Christians venerating the relics of Christian martyrs by saying it smelled of “the stench of graves and dead men’s bones.”
This is Christianity and the irony is that it is actually you who is echoing the pagans
This is not Christianity.

These are people who have never struggled in their lives, so nothing is real to them. They see the suffering of others like a movie or a TV show. The whole Lindsay Clancy thing is just "Team Edward or Team Jacob" applied to a real life tragedy, and they're arguing fan theories.
