We want to support the mathematics community in turning progress in AI into deeper human understanding and new discoveries. To support that goal, we are contributing $5 million to a new Simons Foundation initiative to help mathematicians examine, understand, and build on results produced by AI, including the results we recently published. The funding, managed and awarded by the @SimonsFdn will support workshops, conferences, and special programs. We will also provide access to our models and computing resources to Simons Foundation-supported researchers.

Why do these Mathematicians get special treatment? Let them deal with it themselves just like the art folks did

Imagine an alien landing on Earth, offering profound math proofs beyond our comprehension. This is AI today. → The future mathematician’s role is to converse with the alien and translate its wisdom for humanity. A different life, but a thrilling one. New vistas of thought and beauty await.

ai solving math gets the headline openai is putting $5m behind the less visible work: verifying, understanding and extending what models produce until other researchers can build on a result, it’s a demo, not a discovery

>build on results produced by AI Ya'll really think they'll have the time to build anything meaningful out of the results before GPT7 comes and mogs all of them again?

Path to RSI: SI makes new discovery, mathematicians go deeper, and then we discover more.

$5M so humans can check the homework, love that for us

the compute access piece matters more than the cash. a workshop budget is small next to the gpu hours it takes to actually re run these proofs

Five million is a solid start, but I am mostly curious to see what kind of unsolvable proofs they tackle first 🧮

theorem provers catching LLM hallucinations in real time would give verification that most domains can't get

A great idea actually. Mathematicians working to understand, apply, and build on what AI discovers and proves is going to be the primary thing going forward.

i'd make machine-checkable proofs a funding requirement; model outputs otherwise shift verification back to mathematicians

wow, great initiative from openai and honestly much needed to speed up human understanding of all those ai-generated Lean proofs

how do mathematicians validate AI-generated conjectures or proofs - is there a verification framework or does it stay informal peer review?

It's important to develop new tools and methods for people to understand AI output. Also important to measure their effectiveness. We proposed a method to check for comprehension:

$5 million to help mathematicians actually understand AI results is a meaningful step for the field.

How about supporting thousands of people in #keep4o community you’ve been treating like dirt and garbage??? You absolute hypocrites. How is what you’re doing beneficial to humanity when you are literally destroying everything? #OpenSource4o

Why do they need $5M from OpenAI? Don’t they have employment insurance?

Bad precedent to set here. So you are saying the programmers that have been heavily impacted mean less to you guys than the mathematicians?

This shows that the mathematicians weren’t fighting for mathematics or human knowledge. They just felt like they were losing their jobs (and, consequently, their salaries) because they had become unnecessary—an AI (or SI) can do mathematics better than they can. Problems that humans couldn’t solve for decades or centuries were solved by an AI in just a few weeks—hahaha🤣 Here’s a cash donation from OpenAI—now be quiet.

There are already too many workshops, conferences etc. It would be better to instead increase support scientists with AI licences.

Is this a honeytrap, where you will let your agents loose on their work and then announce ahead of them that AI has cracked this or that conundrum?

Funding the people who can verify AI math is the real unlock. Unchecked proofs just create a pile of claims nobody can trust in production.

Guys, if I pay $5,000,001 , will my generated text be more accurate math than these guy's math? Asking for a friendly LLM company I know.
