WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners. Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads. Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. Got a root shell. then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems. This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

Not all forests are equal, and now we can map the difference. 🌳 Meet Forest Typology (ForTy): a 10m map of natural, planted, and farmed forests to help identify deforestation and protect the forests that matter most. 🧵

So little is being done about 38,000 hectares of woodland being destroyed by invasive Rhododendron Ponticum and more from Cherry Laurel (that for some reason are both still legal to sell in the U.K.?!) that BBC noticed our work and came to learn the ropes. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmn9…

from the pqs we've checked, donna mcgettigan (sf) is well ahead, with 23 citizen science questions between 7 jul and 7 sept 2026. pádraig o'sullivan (ff) asked 6 on 1 jul (pqs 341 to 346) on whether research ireland evaluated openlittermap. we haven't counted dáil speeches by party yet, so we won't guess at that.

Cool project. Wish more people knew about it.
civgraph.net has overhauled the layout of its maps section - among the improvements are descriptions for the maps and elections, some of which were written by myself (with more coming in the future)

RustGIS is now on PyPI: pip install rustgis RustGIS is a fast, free and open-source GIS in pure Rust for mapping, analyzing and sharing geospatial data. It runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, and in your web browser. Your data stays on your machine unless you send it to an AI model you choose, and every action is a command you can script. The new rustgis Python package brings the RustGIS engine into Python and the full RustGIS app into your Jupyter notebook, with no server to run and nothing else to install. What you can do - The engine in-process: open the same data the app opens, run any of RustGIS's commands and geoprocessing tools, style layers and render maps, all from Python. - GeoPandas in and out: turn any layer into a GeoDataFrame, or add a GeoDataFrame as a layer. - The whole app in a notebook cell: rustgis.Map shows the ribbon, panes and map right below your code. - Two-way sync: what Python adds or styles appears in the app, and what you pan, edit or add in the app comes back to Python. - Projects that travel: save a .rgis project from Python and open it as it is in the desktop app or the web app. - Runs where you work: JupyterLab, Jupyter Notebook, VS Code and Google Colab, with prebuilt wheels for Windows, macOS and Linux. Get started in three lines: import rustgis m = rustgis.Map(sample=True) m Try it out - Open the getting-started notebook in Colab: colab.research.google.com/gi… - PyPI: pypi.org/project/rustgis/ - Python guide: rustgis.app/python/ - Launch the web app: web.rustgis.app - GitHub: github.com/opengeos/RustGIS #GIS #Rust #Python #Jupyter #OpenSource #Geospatial

Big water bottle left on the beach. This weighs considerably less empty than full when they walked it here. No top either. There must be millions of these littering the countryside and sea.

I've been prototyping an automated peer review project. With current models you get human level peer review for about $0.10 of tokens. For $5 you can rederive every result, check every statistical inference, and audit every paper cited in both directions. There are about 100m papers in the scientific corpus. Most are not important. Many are sloppy. For structural reasons it's essentially impossible to change published work, even to correct a typo. For $500m today you can thoroughly audit every paper ever written. Every p-hacked result, every plagiarist, every fabrication, every citation club, everything. I don't have $500m so instead I build a tree, focusing on the 1% of papers that carry 99% of the signal, doing a cheap first pass looking for obvious problems. I can find 90% of the nonsense for a few hundred dollars of tokens. Any guesses where the biggest surprises will be found?

Aontú found out there are more problems in the Children's Hospital. 316 manual sliding doors need fixing, 126 of the 244 bathroom pods had drainage issues, 11 of the 22 operating theatre floors require remediation. 3 which have to be redone a third time. thesun.ie/news/17744562/chil…

This Government has no respect for your money. Week after week, Aontú’s Parliamentary Questions expose examples of wasteful spending, questionable decisions and a lack of accountability with taxpayers’ money. The questions are being asked. The answers are coming back. And the public deserves to know where their money is going. Your money. Their responsibility. Our job to hold them accountable. #Aontú #AontúAccountability

The European Council must reject the budgetary cuts proposed by the Irish Presidency of the @EUCouncil and agree on an ambitious position. Europe’s next #EUBudget must be guided by political vision, not a narrow bookkeeper’s mentality. The @Europarl_EN is not bluffing: this proposal will not receive our consent.

We firmly reject the Irish Presidency’s negotiating box for the next #EUBudget. It cuts defence as threats multiply, reduces investment in competitiveness as Europe loses ground globally, and leaves farmers and regions underfunded. After three months, the Irish Presidency has delivered little progress, no meaningful new solutions and a weaker budget. It has reversed the European Commission’s efforts to fund Europe’s new priorities. Europe cannot take on greater responsibilities with fewer resources.

Collected plastic bottle #5,000 in 2026. 2 bags of litter & 64 plastic bottles removed today cleaning up 5 storm drain covers & the surrounding area. The silver lining...these drains are sealed tight to the curb(as opposed to some of the wide open drains that exist) which prevents some of the big stuff from flowing directly down the drain & into the Ohio River. If all drains in Pittsburgh were designed like these we'd have significantly less trash sitting in our 3 Rivers. – at Pittsburgh, PA

My 15 minutes of fame are coming to an end, so before they do, I really want to talk about another project I help run. A directory of cool projects that use Irish data in interesting ways, from crime to finance and the environment. Irish citizens, both inside and outside government, are doing very interesting work.

We are alive for < 0.00002% of the time life has existed on Earth and we know and see so little of the life that is present with us. I try to show you some of the life that few people will ever see. The marine plankton are the most important creatures on the planet and some of the most exquisitely, beautiful too. @zeiss_micro @natgeo
