After the hearing, @PeterFrumhoff, former chief climate scientist at @UCSUSA, told ExxonKnews that the hacker's sentencing is hopefully “a stepping stone, not a final moment” of accountability for the attack against key players in the #ExxonKnew movement. exxonknews.org/p/exxonknew-h…

"Now more than ever, scientists, advocates and our policymakers must fight back against scare tactics, delay maneuvers, and other abuses of power by the fossil fuel industry. A safer, healthier & more just future is at stake."

ALT A Manhattan judge will issue a sentence today for Aviram Azari, a self-described “hacker for hire” who pleaded guilty in what is known as the “Dark Basin” cyberattack. The large-scale spear phishing venture targeted individuals at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and other public interest organizations working to expose concerted efforts by ExxonMobil and other fossil fuel industry interests to spread disinformation about climate science and prevent climate action.

Closing the door to #solargeoengineering research means flying blind when someone decides to deploy - & leaving research to be funded by untethered private capital. What's needed is transparent, collaborative publicly funded research, w/in a primary commitment to mitigation.

Saddened to learn of Roger Payne's passing. I had the joy of researching humpback song with Roger in the early 1980s. He was as much an artist & musician as he was a scientist - passionate & intuitive. We hear the world differently because of him.
The great Roger Payne has passed. I was able to speak with him and bid farewell. Five days prior, when he knew his end was coming, he published this recollection to help us find our way forward. time.com/6284884/whale-scien…

Excellent piece. Also senseless as a climate response unless we decarbonize drastically is solar geoengineering - albeit for very different reasons.
Replying to @_david_ho_
I use the CO₂ removal (CDR) as time machine analogy to argue that while we need to research and develop CDR because it’s needed in the future, CDR is useless as a climate solution until we decarbonize drastically. 2/2
