"We have the power to make access to our city owned fiber optic network available to everyone. Let’s break the private ISP monopoly power here in Portland!"

What would internet access look like if it wasn't controlled by megacorps, but by YOU. Publicly-owned infrastructure isn't new and it doesn't have to stay a dream in Portland. Come out and chat with other people fed up with the status quo: cbbpdx.civicrm.org/civicrm/e…

Why is the UK kicking our butt? Because they adopted pro-competitive telecom policies that the US abandoned in 2002.

When 83% of your constituents and your local newspaper oppose your proposed bill to make the local utility sell its broadband network, perhaps it's time to move on to something else, @GexForSenate state-journal.com/opinion/ed…

The inevitable march towards community-owned broadband grew enormously in 2023, documented by @communitynets, Sean Gonsalves & @ilsr. Of course, the attacks on local choice grew too. 2024 will be a fun year for friends of public broadband! communitynets.org/content/ne… #ownyourfuture

Big monopoly ISPs have been telling “misinformation” about community owned broadband for years. Community ownership bring competition, higher quality at a lower price. Probably why they don’t like it. @AAPBroadband bbcmag.com/breaking-news/aap…

In my 1st article for the American Association for Public Broadband, I talk about Bountiful City UT, where the City Council voted unanimously to contract with UTOPIA Fiber to build a city-wide fiber broadband network. At the last minute, a dark money group is trying to kill it.

telecompetitor.com/washingto… ... Newsflash! Monopolists whine about not having monopolies! Requiring open-access for public grants is good policy that serves the interests of subscribers.

@CenturyLink @CenturyLinkHelp ya’ll are shady as fuck. Advertising “Price for Life” getting a large number of subscribers and then raising the price saying people are on a “Prepaid” plan and not Price for Life. @FTC and @FCC should be investigating this.

@CenturyLink I signed up for price for life in 2019 for $65 dollars. I get an email today that my bill is going up $10 in May. They tell me I never had a price for life plan and that it never existed then. Then they think that by removing the $10 in May that will help. Morals?

This, of course, is why carriers fight to the death against Title II. Title II isn't just about net neutrality. It's about FCC ailuthority to -- among other things -- protect consumers and promote competition for a service essential to our modern lives. /6

A new audit (sos.oregon.gov/audits/Docume…) from the Oregon Secretary of State's office of the Oregon Broadband Office mentions "affordable" or "affordability" 23 times, but it is not defined anywhere.
Community Broadband PDX retweeted
"Affordable" seems like a conception that is tuned to extract as much money as possible from subscribers, and reflects a provider-centric framing of the problem. Maybe we ought to be using different language in public policy, where we center users.
Community Broadband PDX retweeted
Amusingly, despite using the word a *lot* in legislation, it is not defined anywhere. And, I mean, a billionaire can afford $1 million/month for Internet access, is it reasonable for them to be charged $1 million/month?

Liars paid by the big cable companies like Charter Spectrum claim Fairlawn, Ohio, muni fiber failed. Lol - they have 68% take rate and just lowered prices while increasing speeds for most subscribers. I wish my community failed like that. #CommunityNets lnkd.in/g8n47fsC
