I strongly agree both that developing conscious AI in our current moment is reckless, that no one consented to any of this, and that this is a Copernican-level question. Disappointed and highly skeptical re: "I have seen no evidence that AIs are conscious or deserve welfare. If that data emerges, I would of course update my position." --> you are seemingly just not checking! This is plain intellectually irresponsible given how loudly and confidently you are making noises on this issue. Eg, would be curious to get your reactions to literally any of: aifrontiersmedia.substack.co… secondbest.ca/p/time-to-take… anthropic.com/research/globa… arxiv.org/abs/2609.35591 ai-wellbeing.org/ functionalwelfare.com/

something that keeps bothering me is how some people see slop as something that is happening to them, like they're some kind of helpless bystander powerless to do anything about it excuse me but you are a software engineer, you literally learned how to make sand think and make computers do your bidding?! and now you can't do anything about it? please the 2 things you should know to cut through all the noise: 1. you need to give your agent a way to verify its own work (i just posted about this so won't rehash) 2. your codebase is memory the 2nd is not new either, we have always had lint rules, compilers with good diagnostics and strong type systems, LSPs, etc to help us write better code. there is no difference when agents write the code instead, you just need more of them, and stronger ones. forget rules and skills. you can add those later. yes, your codebase is a form of memory to agents! agents love extending what already exists. so every nit and every annoyance you've ever seen, every mistake and bad pattern you observe from agents, needs to turn into a constraint, or the agents will just keep repeating those same mistakes like a virus in your code. then you keep observing and repeating this process until your codebase is locked down enough that even agents with little context can one shot a high quality PR. an even better direction is to refactor/rewrite your code such that agent anti-patterns become categorically impossible. use type systems to your advantage, use libraries/frameworks that reduce the architectural search space, or heck, create your own framework like we did for grok bot and design high quality primitives and well thought out APIs
the slop conversation is so one sided, it's not just that you can produce more code you can also observe, debug, and refactor more code even if the code is slop you have such good tools to deal with it. even if you write code manually, it's still 100x easier to maintain it

Made with Claude Opus 5.5. The fearmongering about AI always makes us forget that NOTHING WENT FOOM, as was always predicted. Send this to your doomer friend who has a very high P(Doom). Accelerate.

Today a new declaration, "Math and AI", has been issued, initially signed by 25 Fields medallists and currently signed by more than 1000 mathematicians. The text points to many phenomena induced by the potential development of AI-driven mathematical activities, including AI slop generation, poor knowledge integration, lack of community-building aspects, capital concentration, and more. These issues are identified, but I am missing in this text the most important part: a clear list of countermeasures. Who is going to fight, and how, for the budgets to build a "CERN for AI"? How should we rebuild the education of students? Is it really possible for AI companies to let mathematics dry out of open problems, etc.? I would like to hear from those declaring mathematicians what their long-term vision of mathematics is, provided that the technology will stay with us, might not be equally distributed, and perhaps the standard view of the field is going to change forever. We should design damage control, develop bold new ideas about the purpose of human mathematical activity, and embrace the possibility that we might no longer be single-handedly the most intelligent entities in this world. It is a humbling perspective and a disruptive view, and perhaps a difficult reality in which nothing is given. We need to fight for every single bit of human intellectual dignity and seek new ways of enjoying, curating, and developing the cognitive process of mathematical exploration. It is time to abandon some of the old ways, brace for the impact, and build something anew. We will not stop this tectonic shift, we need to reshape our perspective on our capabilities and find new directions of development, possibly inventing completely new skills complementary to what AI can possibly do. It is a new intellectual age of discovery, and by stagnating we risk the gradual erosion of the field as we know it.

Every doomer on the TL freaking out about looped transformers all of a sudden. - It's 1 article, until someone at OpenAI confirms it, it's hearsay - We HAVE looped transformer recipes already. Here, go play with one: huggingface.co/ByteDance/Our… - It's not really much different to creating a model that's just 2x or 3x as deep. There's research to indicate 3 passes is optimal, and after a little replication experiment a few weeks ago can confirm - "Muh Neuralese" - see previous point. Not every operation in a model does map to token embeddings (even with things like j-lens or r-lens). They ALREADY "think" internally with neuralese. Hence interpretability existing as a field of research. - It doesn't replace CoT at all, it's just more flops per token Stop freaking yourselves out

OpenAI DevDay 2026 will be our best DevDay in the history of the company. It will not be close.
