What advantage does an AI label actually give the end user of a game, besides warning them about potential bugs or untested content? Even with AI, someone skilled and experienced can achieve much better results. The same applies to game development in general. How professional the process is, or how the game was made, should not overshadow the actual game. The game should speak for itself. However, for developers, artists, and game development businesses, this matters much more because we are talking about work quality, responsibility, and honest disclosure. AI is still in a gray area in this field, just like other forms of generated or outsourced work, even when AI is not involved.

AI is a tool, a developer will "direct" it much like a film director. It's their "touch" that makes things fun and playable. If it looks like slop, then it's like a crap film director. Usually it's because the art is AI and not great. But itch.io has loads of hand crafted art that will elevate it to a lovely look peice of work, as long as the effort is put in.
"I spent a year working on my game, but because it has the AI label, no-one is buying it." 😭 Then presents game trailer that looks like incongruous garbage! It ain't the AI tag that's putting folks off fella! Anyway, here's some more from Beep's Escape (where no AI was used)

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed what he considers to be the most intriguing aspect of the first Super Mario Bros. game: "And the biggest invention, or rather, the most intriguing aspect of Super Mario, is that Mario doesn't actually fight Bowser. Normally, if there's a boss at the end, you have to fight him, right? But creating a battle is difficult, and we were really struggling with how to do it. When I thought, 'I can't create a battle like this,' I realized that since it's a game where you keep running to the right, how about making it so that the person who reaches the far right wins? Then I had a brilliant idea: 'Why not just jump over the opponent instead of fighting?' All you have to do is jump over Bowser, and he'll fall. I found it surprisingly fun when I tried it, and I was really happy when I realized that." polygon.com/nintendo-super-m…

Part of the AI hate comes from how it is marketed as if one prompt can produce miraculous results, but in reality, it is not what people imagine! Without skills, you will get stuck with prototypes, fake results at a surface level, and an unmaintainable codebase. Not to mention hallucination loops! Also, AI-generated assets still suffer from the same soulless look and lack of consistency. I think the most promising progress in this field will come when design software embraces CLI and MCP to create faster pipelines and workspace setups, as well as help with rigging or updates textures, AKA automation. But even then, we are not there yet, although we are getting close.

Shigeru Miyamoto shared thoughts on generative AI and its meaning for creativity in game development. He compared AI to the evolution of computers and design tools. As technology handles more technical work, human design sense and creative judgment grow more important. Miyamoto distinguishes between “creating something” and “doing the work.” Creating starts with deciding what to make, building the overall structure, and having clear intention. The work that follows fills in details, polishes, and executes the idea. “People can become so satisfied with the work itself that they start mistaking that satisfaction for having created something good.” Miyamoto believes AI taking over repetitive work could give people more chances to focus on what they truly want to create. “The more AI takes care of all kinds of tasks for us, the more opportunities we all have to think seriously about what it really means to create something.” He acknowledges AI could eventually handle almost everything in the creative process, but for now: “I think there’s still plenty that we humans can do.”
