So many. Necessarily there are many more significant anti-9/11s than 9/11s American Independence, steam engine, transatlantic cable, Wireless radio,
I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

One dissapointing characteristic of the AI era is the extent to which otherwise smart, competent, and driven people are using the AI tools as an excuse to turn off their brains. Brothers, the agent swarm is not a replacement for thinking! It is an augmentation!

I worry this makes things really hard for extremely attractive people who just want to seduce an OpenAI or Anthropic employee for their money

at a birthday for a boy in the new daycare we're attending: Hosts aren't greeting anyone. 1/3 of parents are loitering isolated, the rest are clearly friends. Half a dozen dads are watching the game Not what I expected in the Midwest

I've been prototyping an automated peer review project. With current models you get human level peer review for about $0.10 of tokens. For $5 you can rederive every result, check every statistical inference, and audit every paper cited in both directions. There are about 100m papers in the scientific corpus. Most are not important. Many are sloppy. For structural reasons it's essentially impossible to change published work, even to correct a typo. For $500m today you can thoroughly audit every paper ever written. Every p-hacked result, every plagiarist, every fabrication, every citation club, everything. I don't have $500m so instead I build a tree, focusing on the 1% of papers that carry 99% of the signal, doing a cheap first pass looking for obvious problems. I can find 90% of the nonsense for a few hundred dollars of tokens. Any guesses where the biggest surprises will be found?

Illinois is embarrassed by the number of career criminals caught reoffending after slaps on the wrist. But the legislature has come up with a solution. No, not a solution to the recidivism problem, but a solution to the judges-and-prosecutors-being-embarrassed-by-their-bad-decisions problem. A new law automatically seals the records of every criminal case (with minor narrow exceptions). This means that journalists can’t write stories like this unless they maintain their own parallel records of sentencing instances. This is unconstitutional. The public has a right to access to the court records, and a government can’t blanket seal such an overbroad category of cases. @HamLincLaw would love to bring that lawsuit to block this law, but we need a journalist or publication who can show that they’ll be affected by this law to have standing to do it. If that’s you, and you’re interested, DM or email me.
