Oh this story is delicious. Some choice parts for you:
The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean. buff.ly/5cLtnha

I worry this makes things really hard for extremely attractive people who just want to seduce an OpenAI or Anthropic employee for their money

I've been prototyping an automated peer review project. With current models you get human level peer review for about $0.10 of tokens. For $5 you can rederive every result, check every statistical inference, and audit every paper cited in both directions.
There are about 100m papers in the scientific corpus. Most are not important. Many are sloppy. For structural reasons it's essentially impossible to change published work, even to correct a typo.
For $500m today you can thoroughly audit every paper ever written. Every p-hacked result, every plagiarist, every fabrication, every citation club, everything.
I don't have $500m so instead I build a tree, focusing on the 1% of papers that carry 99% of the signal, doing a cheap first pass looking for obvious problems. I can find 90% of the nonsense for a few hundred dollars of tokens.
Any guesses where the biggest surprises will be found?
Illinois is embarrassed by the number of career criminals caught reoffending after slaps on the wrist.
But the legislature has come up with a solution. No, not a solution to the recidivism problem, but a solution to the judges-and-prosecutors-being-embarrassed-by-their-bad-decisions problem. A new law automatically seals the records of every criminal case (with minor narrow exceptions). This means that journalists can’t write stories like this unless they maintain their own parallel records of sentencing instances.
This is unconstitutional. The public has a right to access to the court records, and a government can’t blanket seal such an overbroad category of cases.
@HamLincLaw would love to bring that lawsuit to block this law, but we need a journalist or publication who can show that they’ll be affected by this law to have standing to do it.
If that’s you, and you’re interested, DM or email me.
Getting a 42-month sentence for robbing the Prada store on Oak Street of $46,000 didn’t set him straight.
Months after getting out, he helped rob a utility crew of a $25,000 camera, which made the feds angry.
His sentence: 8 years *federal*

Tenth update to OpenAI problem #109 (integer multiplication): we are now past 2^-11.
κ = 2^-10.666 (6.1534 × 10⁻⁴), tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²
That is about 1.32 fold over our previous 2^-11.066 (4.6637 × 10⁻⁴), and a 2¹⁷¹ fold improvement over the original OAI result.
Ninth update to OpenAI problem #109 (integer multiplication): we are now past 2^-12.
κ = 2⁻¹¹·⁰⁶⁶ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
The exact witness is 4.6637 × 10⁻⁴, about 3.70 fold over our previous 1.2613 × 10⁻⁴, and a 2¹⁷⁰ fold improvement over the original OAI result.

good news: @0xdoug hit 2^(-15)!
bad news: we missed the 12:44am target, based on my careful data analysis we will now have linear time integer multiplication at 6:44pm
by popular demand, I removed the O(n) limit

update! @0xdoug hit 2^(-34), we are sadly now 18 minutes behind schedule in reaching linear time multiplication (per my careful data analysis)

Validated and merged Rohan's PR. Big gain on a really difficult regime (that frankly I was stuck at). Incredible work.
κ = 2⁻¹⁵ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
A 500 thousand fold improvement over the previous result and a 2 ^ 167 fold improvement over the original OpenAI result.
This result was a true community effort that combined techniques from a number of contributors. I want to take time to highlight each of them, but for now getting these results verified and published as fast as possible so everyone working on the problem is at the leading edge.
So cool! The improvements in the end started getting faster than we could run the verifications.
Submitted a new conditional multiplication bound: κ = 3.918734894×10⁻⁵—0.8248% above PR #39. github.com/CrocSwap/integer-…
@sama @thsottiaux could I get a reset? Mostly used Codex here but Claude collaborating on the other side might have helped reach a new best

We are publishing a third update to OpenAI problem #109 (integer multiplication), and we have now entered 2^-1x territory.
κ > 2⁻¹⁸ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
The exact witness is 4.19 × 10⁻⁶, roughly 558 fold over our previous 7.5 × 10⁻⁹, about 2.2 fold over the strongest open result, and a 2¹⁶⁴ fold improvement over the original OAI result.
We are publishing a second update to OpenAI problem #109 (integer multiplication), building on Doug Colkitt's results, with further tightening.
κ = 2⁻²⁷ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
The exact witness is 7.499 × 10⁻⁹, a roughly 1.5 fold improvement over our previous 4.98 × 10⁻⁹, 90 fold over Colkitt's 8.3 × 10⁻¹¹, and a 2¹⁵⁵ fold improvement over the original OAI result.

We are publishing an update to OpenAI problem #109 (integer multiplication) with further tightening.
κ = 2⁻³⁴ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
The exact witness is 8.3 × 10⁻¹¹, a roughly 48 million fold improvement over the previous result and a 2¹⁴⁸ fold improvement over original OAI result.
The improvement came from removing the spacing penalty behind the quadratic bottleneck. This was done by moving compact control bits instead of entire windows.
We are publishing an update to OpenAI problem #109 Integer multiplication) with another substantial further tightening:
κ = 2⁻⁵⁹ (from OpenAI’s original κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
Approximately 500 thousand fold improvement over our previous result and a 2¹²³ fold improvement over the original OAI result.
The latest redesigned the finite network to share intermediate computations and scratch space, then tightened the recursion and Gaussian estimates.

Still working on Part 3 and hope to have it out soon, but just had to jump in on the latest development of the Malfoid extended universe:
Professor "Hellfire" McGonagall

Part 2 of @moonlightbro's Malfoid fanfic, I forgot the "stupid ghost" line in Part 1, so fixed it here.
If you like this, please show support to @moonlightbro, it would not be possible otherwise. I cannot write to save my life, takes me days to string together 4 lines of dialogue that doesn't make me hate myself 😂
This type of stuff isn't my normal content, but I'm committed to fully adapting this, even if the trend dies in 5 minutes. Just love everything about this trend, especially how wholesome it feels.
Should be able to finish it in the next part, but might be a bit due to certain challenges and busy with stuff.
Hope you all enjoy.

Found him from this Malfoid clip.
I’m hoping the attitudes toward art change. As you can see in the thread for this video, it was a very normal creative process: Someone threw out an idea, a talented writer wrote the scene, and then @schmede_AI adapted for screen.
