When the First Lady’s chief of staff; who should remain neutral over this so-called ceasefire; reposts Mendel attacking President Zelenskyy, I fear we are witnessing an attempt to undermine Ukraine’s elected leadership. Could this be paving the way for a coup d’état under the cover of ceasefire deal?
I stand with Ukraine’s people and their right to decide their own future. 🇺🇦 @ZelenskyyUa @MFA_Ukraine @Kyrylo_Budanov

Last month, Valery faced a choice: risk his family’s lives on the mined road out of Oleshky — or starve.
Tomorrow, his neighbors must choose: stay and suffer, or trust their Russian tormentors to deliver them to Ukrainian-held territory. correspondent.news/articles/…

The only way to handle this
Since a few Kyiv Independent readers have asked, I’d like to explain what happened with Caolan Robertson’s video, out of respect for our supporters.
Our team found that a video on Caolan’s @CaolanReports YouTube channel included a fragment of an earlier Kyiv Independent video, used without permission and without a request for permission. It wasn’t just footage. It was an animated map that takes our team a lot of work to produce.
Importantly, Caolan’s video cropped out our logo from the fragment. Instead of crediting our work, it fully removed the attribution to the Kyiv Independent. That isn’t citation or fair use.
Our team member did what is standard when your content is used this way on YouTube: They filed a copyright report. YouTube reviewed the case and removed the video. We follow the same process whenever our work is used without permission, regardless of who the creator is.
Worth noting that a removal like this doesn’t kill the creator’s work: The video can simply be re-uploaded without the copyrighted material.
So I was surprised that Caolan instead chose to publicly attack the journalists whose work he lifted, and to appeal to journalistic solidarity in a case where he didn’t demonstrate any.
Our team has been reporting on the ground in Ukraine since before the full-scale invasion. We’re independent, funded mostly by our readers, and we earn every dime. We’re very proud of our work, from front-line reporting to war crimes investigations. We respect the work of other journalists and expect the same for ours.
I wish Caolan all the best in telling his audience about Ukraine. If he ever wants to use our work, he’s welcome to ask, like anyone else.
We are all on the same side when it comes to this: We want as many voices as possible telling the world about Ukraine. But being on the same side means respecting and crediting each other’s work. Credit matters because the reporting everyone draws on has to come from somewhere.
Thank you.

Oleshky: What's actually happening?
The Russian siege of the Ukrainian town of Oleshky has been lifted under a temporary ceasefire. The Trump administration and the Kremlin are presenting the local ceasefire as a "humanitarian mission" for the town residents. Here are some important facts to provide context to current events:
Oleshky has been under Russian occupation since the start of the full-scale war in 2022. It became a frontline Russian-occupied town after the liberation of Kherson in November 2022.
It was severely affected by flooding after Russia destroyed the Kakhovka dam on 6 June 2023. Since the flood, the city has had no regular supplies of electricity, gas or drinking water.
Reports of an unfolding humanitarian crisis in the town began to emerge at the end of 2025. The last regular supplies of food were delivered to the town on 26 May 2026. Russia mined all approach roads to the town. Commercial vehicles that attempted to deliver food to the town this summer came under heavy attack by Russian artillery and drones, and were unable to reach the town. Several civilians attempting to bring food to the town from neighboring settlements were killed by mines or drone attacks.
Ukraine claims the Russians blocked off escape routes from the town so as to use the civilians as "human shields" for military operations. Ukrainian intelligence and local administrative reports (including statements from the head of the Oleshky Ukrainian Military Administration, Tetiana Hasanenko) cited that Russian FPV drone operators and mortar crews routinely positioned their equipment, launcher stations, and vehicles inside residential courtyards and active civilian neighborhoods. Russian operators knew Ukrainian reconnaissance drones were monitoring the town and leveraged the presence of non-combatants - who were dependent on local home gardens and drone drops for survival - as cover to launch recon and strike drones across the Dnipro River toward Ukrainian-held Kherson.
Ukraine used heavy drones to deliver supplies to city residents several times this year, with the last supply drop occurring in late September. The Kyiv Independent reported that Kherson Oblast Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said Russian forces attempted to disrupt the deliveries, including by shooting down the drones carrying food. The governor also accused Russian forces of confiscating or reselling humanitarian supplies and detaining residents who receive aid.
The Vatican press office on 16 October 2026 reported that Pope Leo had, during a phone call with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, called for a ceasefire to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and the safe evacuation of civilians from Oleshky. ""During the conversation, the Holy Father expressed his deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and called for a ceasefire to allow the delivery of food and medical assistance, and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population," the statement reads, according to reporting by Interfax-Ukraine.
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump announced on 23 October 2026 that a ceasefire had been agreed to allow humanitarian convoys, food, and medical aid into the town and facilitate civilian evacuations. The ceasefire was initially scheduled to begin on 29 October, but was brought forward by two days. Melania Trump later tweeted that "independent U.S. journalists" would accompany Ukrainian and Russian officials on the "humanitarian" mission. However, it later emerged that the journalists would be from Newsmax, a strongly right-leaning partisan U.S. news channel that supports the Trump administration. No independent international news organizations, such as the BBC, DW, AFP or Reuters, are being allowed to cover the mission on the ground. Two days into the ceasefire, Newsmax has yet to issue any reports from Oleshky.
Reports confirming that civilians evacuating Oleshky would be required to travel through Russian-controlled territory first were published around October 26–27, 2026, after the evacuation route insisted on by the Russian military had reportedly been agreed between the sides. Civilians are to be evacuated to Ukraine's Russian-occupied Crimea, then to southern Russia, then to Belarus, and onward to third-party European countries for civilians seeking to return to Ukrainian-controlled territory. Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and Ukrainian negotiators noted that while routing civilians through occupied territory or Russia posed significant humanitarian concerns (such as mandatory Russian filtration and security checks), facilitating transit out of Oleshky was necessary to prevent further starvation and casualties among the remaining trapped population.
On 29 October it was reported by Ukrainian media that Russia was demining routes in to Oleshky and that Lubinets had departed for the besieged city.
Opinion/Analysis: Humanitarian mission or U.S. election stunt and Russian propaganda?
At its core, the initiative addresses a desperate, long-overdue crisis. For nearly five months, several thousand remaining residents in Oleshky -predominantly elderly and frail -have faced severe starvation, water shortages, and constant exposure to frontline combat. The direct involvement of international moral authorities like Pope Leo XIV, coupled with the coordination between Ukrainian and Russian human rights ombudspersons, indicates that saving human lives remains the primary driving imperative for negotiators. For Ukraine, permitting transit through occupied territory - despite the acute risk of Russian filtration - is a necessary compromise. When civilians are trapped in a flooded, mined war zone without basic provisions, securing a localized pause in hostilities to deliver tons of aid and extract non-combatants is a tangible humanitarian victory, regardless of who claims political credit.
However, the political context surrounding the mission makes it impossible to separate the humanitarian outcome from geopolitical optics. Coming just days before the U.S. midterm elections, the high-profile involvement of First Lady Melania Trump serves as a calculated diplomatic narrative. It allows the U.S. administration to project image control and demonstrate an ability to deliver immediate peacemaking results with Moscow where traditional diplomacy stalled.
Furthermore, restricting news coverage exclusively to Newsmax - a strongly right-leaning outlet aligned with the administration - while barring established independent outlets like Reuters, AFP, or the BBC, underscores a desire to tightly control the media narrative. For the Kremlin, participating in the truce offers a low-cost propaganda opportunity to paper over its image as a savage and cruel occupying power, divert attention from its documented use of human shields, and project a willingness to cooperate on selected humanitarian issues.
The Oleshky ceasefire thus functions simultaneously as both a necessary humanitarian rescue and a politically motivated media event. The life-saving relief, demining, and evacuation corridors provided to starving civilians are very real. However, the timing, exclusive media access, and public presentation strongly indicate that political actors in Washington and Moscow are leveraging a genuine humanitarian crisis for maximum political advantage.

The MAGA+KGB mafia needs a producer to shoot a fake, staged film—not to provide genuine journalistic coverage.
The person overseeing the U.S. side of the plan to evacuate Oleshky is Marc Beckman, a private adviser to Melania Trump (his official bio lists his title as “Exclusive Senior Advisor.”) He is also one of the producers of Melania, a documentary about the First Lady.
Marc Beckman’s background is in marketing, media and cultural projects. He is the founder of the advertising agency DMA United, which works with well-known brands in the fashion, entertainment, and sports industries.
His portfolio does not include direct experience in diplomacy, politics, or humanitarian operations. He is neither a U.S. government official nor a staff member of the Office of the First Lady. However, he has had a longstanding professional relationship with Melania Trump, working with her on business and media projects, including a 2026 documentary sponsored by Amazon.
As for Oleshky, my understanding is that U.S. officials do not currently plan to take part directly in the evacuation on the ground. The American side is expected to be represented by a Newsmax crew. I wish the journalists involved strength and safety for the days ahead.
What we’re about to witness in the coming days is one of the most complex humanitarian operations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. And on the U.S. side, the effort is being coordinated by a private adviser to Melania Trump and the producer of her film.

This is beyond horrifying.
Russia struck a railway station in Dnipro with a drone, killing 13 people who were simply waiting for their train.
The drone operators could see the platform in real time. They could see the civilians standing there. They knew what they were targeting, and they struck anyway.

Shriek louder… maybe someone will finally hear you…. This is the state most people in Ukraine are living in. Losing loved ones happens here every day-some perish right before your eyes, while others learn of the death of their family members later...
This morning alone, russia killed at least 17 people in various cities across Ukraine:
* Dnipro 13 dead and 10 wounded;
* Chernihiv 2 dead and 11 wounded;
* Kremenchuk 2 dead.
Our world is becoming increasingly cruel, life within Ukraine itself is growing harder, and the line between what is normal and abnormal is steadily blurring.

‼️ Urgent: the situation in Oleshky.
The power of social media is real. Whether through X, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp or Viber, people can speak for themselves and share the truth; even when politicians try to obscure the reality.
This is the message I received this morning from Oleshky:
“Yes, it’s all a staged show. They’re cleaning all the streets, painting the curbs, and sprucing everything up for the cameras. They’re trying to create a pretty picture in the middle of hell.
Meanwhile, the Russian military is demining everything and carrying ammo and supplies to their positions — and soon all of that will be flying toward Kherson (((
The number of troops in the city has increased dramatically, there are so many of them...”
Please reshare and let those people speak up!

The United States is collaborating with the Russian fascist invaders in the ethnic cleansing of Ukrainians – a crime against humanity.

Prime Minister Rob Jetten @MinPres and I met with the heads of Ukrainian and Dutch companies in the defense, energy, and software sectors. Our teams also joined us online from Kyiv, where Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade Sjoerd Sjoerdsma is visiting today.
We defined key priorities and decisions that can strengthen our practical economic cooperation: defense production, joint technology and energy projects, industrial development, and, very importantly, satellite technologies and air defense.
Our teams have been tasked with working out a specific air defense project, Bliksem. We have already started this work. We are taking our cooperation to a level where it is clear that standing alongside Ukraine also means achieving additional positive industrial, technological, and social results. Thank you for your support!
