One woman picked up a pen and challenged an entire industry. Meet Rachel Carson—a marine biologist whose courage and scientific integrity changed America. Born in Pennsylvania in 1907, Carson spent years studying the natural world before becoming one of the nation’s most respected science writers. In 1962, she published Silent Spring, exposing the ecological dangers of the widespread, indiscriminate use of pesticides like DDT. Her message was simple but powerful: technological progress should never come at the expense of human health or the environment we all depend on. The backlash was immediate. Chemical companies attacked her credibility, questioned her science, and tried to discredit her work. Carson refused to back down. She let the evidence speak for itself. History proved her warnings deserved serious attention. Silent Spring helped ignite the modern environmental movement, influenced the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, and contributed to the eventual ban on most agricultural uses of DDT in the United States. Rachel Carson reminded us that real courage isn’t always found on a battlefield. Sometimes it’s found in the willingness to tell an uncomfortable truth, even when powerful interests want you to stay silent. What other Americans have changed the nation not through politics or war—but through the courage to challenge the status quo? #RachelCarson #SilentSpring #Environment #Conservation #ScienceMatters #EcoAwareness @RachelCarsonDC @EPA @epaleezeldin @NatGeo @ScienceMagazine @envhist

We talk about rewilding forests, prairies, and wetlands, but what about the fish? 🐠 🐟️ Our rivers, lakes, and streams are just as compromised as our forests, yet fish are out of sight and too often out of mind. And the biggest threat to native fish isn't pollution or dams, it's other fish. Learn more: rewilding.org/dont-forget-th… #Rewilding #NativeFish #Conservation #Wildlife

Celebrate safely and help prevent wildfires this Fourth of July! In Maryland, 96% of wildfires are caused by humans. So while the Fourth of July is a time for family, friends, and celebration, it's also a time to remember that fireworks and dry vegetation can be a dangerous combination. Wildfires can happen quickly when conditions are hot, dry, and windy. Dry grass, leaves, pine needles, and other vegetation can ignite easily and allow fire to spread rapidly. In Maryland, wildfire risk is highest when low humidity, wind, and dry forest fuels combine. Before lighting fireworks, keep these safety tips in mind: ✅ Leave fireworks to the professionals by attending a public display. ✅ Never use fireworks near dry grass, fields, forests, or other vegetation. ✅ Keep a hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher nearby. ✅ Never relight malfunctioning fireworks. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak them thoroughly with water before disposal. ✅ Fully extinguish and soak all fireworks debris before placing it in the trash. ✅ Check local restrictions and avoid using fireworks during especially dry or windy conditions. A single spark can start a wildfire. This holiday, help protect Maryland's forests, wildlife, communities, and firefighters by celebrating responsibly.

“I think we're more than pissed. We're ready to come out with our pitchforks,” three-time Olympian Hannah Teter told Mother Jones’ Nate Halverson. “How the heck did they get this approved?” Snowboarder Hannah Teter, who won gold in the halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, and silver at the 2010 games in Vancouver, has voiced her opposition on Instagram, where she has 275,000 followers, as well as on her Facebook page. Public uproar has echoed across the Tahoe area since April, when our yearlong Mother Jones investigation revealed that, in California, the fastest-growing use of glyphosate—the main ingredient in Roundup—is to spray forested areas, including this massive new US Forest Service project around Lake Tahoe. "When I first saw the article that it's coming to Tahoe, my heart sank and I actually prayed like, God, how do we fight this? It's so worrisome because like I do care about nature. From the animals to the insects to the trees, it has us in the community, up in arms," Teter told Nate. People in Tahoe, worried about glyphosate's potential health and environmental harms, have begun organizing to slow or stop the Forest Service’s plan. That effort includes Kelly Ryerson—Glyphosate Girl on Instagram—an influential voice who visited the White House earlier this year with other members of the MAHA coalition to urge President Trump to call off his support of the controversial herbicide. For more on our investigation into the Forest Service's use of glyphosate, head to MotherJones.com
