@NZUN was pleased to co-host with the European Partnership for Brain Health a roundtable dedicated to fostering global collaboration for brain health through science diplomacy.
We engaged in discussion on opportunities to strengthen international cooperation through shared research infrastructure, knowledge exchange, and coordinated investment.
‘Member states must avoid the trap of regarding reform as something that others will deliver for us…..reform begins with us. It requires Member States to make the decisions that only Member States can make.’
The New Zealand National Statement was delivered at the 81st session of UN General Assembly today.
“As we prepare to appoint the next Secretary-General to lead the UN into the next phase, we should be clear about what this moment requires. We call on the new Secretary-General:
- to be a courageous guardian of the UN charter and to assert the UN’s vital role in the maintenance of peace and security;
- to provide strong leadership across the UN’s development and human rights pillars;
- to maintain momentum and ambition on UN reform; and
- to ensure that the UN works for all states.
The sovereign equality of states is one of the most central principles of the UN Charter. It must also be central to your approach. The promise of the multilateral system is that every state, regardless of its size or circumstances has a stake in shaping our shared future.
The most fundamental step we can take as Member States to revive this organisation is to unequivocally recommit ourselves – both in words and in deeds - to the principles that the Charter requires us to follow in our relations with other states - respect for sovereignty, the pursuit of dialogue and cooperation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.”

‘We need a Secretary-General who is active in conflict prevention, mediation, and peace-making. The Secretary-General should never have to ask permission or forgiveness for acting to prevent or resolve conflict.’

We acknowledge the Secretary-General’s visits to the region during his tenure, and his advocacy on issues of importance to Pacific and Small Island Developing States.

Proud that New Zealand has been able to provide Ukraine with support to defend itself through NZDF deployments to Europe and $6.5m in military support through the International Fund for Ukraine.
We are also helping with $10m in humanitarian and reconstruction assistance.
My thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as they mark 2 years since Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion.
‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’. Conflict prevention and peacebuilding save lives and money. It’s time we got serious about investing in both #PBF #PBC #peacebuilding #CANZ – at Manhattan, NY
A really important outcome, that will provide 1,000s of kiwis living in Australia with more rights and security. The right thing to do, and a fitting way to celebrate this very special ANZAC relationship 🇳🇿🤝🇦🇺 – at Wellington City, New Zealand
A historic decision by Australia will provide a new direct pathway to citizenship for New Zealanders living in Australia. It is a significant improvement in the rights of New Zealanders, and strengthens the trans-Tasman relationship 🇳🇿🇦🇺
