Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization.
A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ.
Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that “the Church is not there to convert” and “Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.”
Excuse me, but…what?
Last time I checked, the Founder said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Sure sounds like conversion to me.
When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
So impassioned is he for this work that he says, “I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22); and “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16)!
Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary élan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a “new evangelization,” which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ.
Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for God’s sake, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.

Learning that liturgy teaches theology is crazy tbh. I feel like as a non denom or even many very low church you don't see it (its my background relax). My Reformed baptists even get this bro.

“I have often said during my 20 years as a bishop that I am not interested in a private education for the privileged as an apostolate of the Church. The Archdiocese of Portland should not be operating schools whose institutional priorities and plans are dominated by a secular, utilitarian vision of academic excellence and great sports programs, while remaining inaccessible to so many of our families because of high tuition costs. To do so would be wholly inconsistent with the history and purpose of Catholic education. Our first job is not to prepare children eventually to get into a great college or university, but to help them get into heaven!”

Thomas Aquinas says a starving man who takes your bread is not a thief. Modern capitalism has no category for that.
The assumption baked into most modern minds, including most Christian minds, is that ownership is absolute. Your property is yours. Full stop.
Aquinas dismantles that in the Summa Theologiae, II-II, question 66.
His first move: the division of possessions is not natural law. It is a human convention, an addition to natural law made for the sake of order and peace. Useful, legitimate, but secondary. Underneath the property lines, natural law still says the goods of the earth exist for everyone.
Second move: you hold your possessions as a steward, not an absolute owner. Aquinas says man should possess external things "not as his own, but as common," ready to share them with those in need. The title is yours. The destination is everyone's.
Third move, the one that scandalizes modern readers: in manifest and urgent need, taking what is required for survival is not theft. Theft requires taking what another still has a right to. But in extreme necessity, the goods revert to their original common destination. Legal title dissolves where survival is at stake.
Note what this is not. Aquinas is not a communist. He defends private property as prudent and necessary. But he refuses to absolutize it.
The medieval doctor would say the modern instinct, that property rights override a dying man's need, is not capitalism. It is a theological error about who the earth actually belongs to.
Which conviction do you actually hold when push comes to shove: absolute ownership, or Aquinas's stewardship?

I still don’t understand why someone would even choose to identify as a Christian if they believed and said these things?
Why go through the trouble of all of that when you deny everything we believe?

Her name was Bonnie Pierce. 38. St. Paul. Mother of four.
August 22. The duplex caught fire.
Aurora kicked out an air conditioner and climbed through the window. Bonnie got out too. Then she realized 3-year-old Grace was still inside.
She went back.
Firefighters found her in a bedroom. When they lifted her, the toddler was underneath her. She had used her body as a shield.
Bonnie had no oxygen for about 15 minutes. Burns over nearly half her body. She died two days later, August 24.
Grace lived.
A GoFundMe for Bonnie’s children has raised about $207,000.
A GoFundMe tied to Lindsay Clancy’s parents — Clancy is charged with killing her three children — passed $1 million.
One mother ran into the fire.
The other is on trial for the deaths of her kids.
The platform did not invent that gap. Donors did.
Remember Bonnie Pierce.

Both of these cases have a weirdly high number of people defending the murderer.
I think its very plausible some are operatives for distraction and outrage.
Controlled opposition is the bread and butter of a controlled society.
