The collapse in violent crime over three decades has been one of the most striking developments of my lifetime. News is about what’s going wrong, and rightly so. But the bigger picture also matters From today’s figures:-

Having watched ITV’s undercover investigation into Reform UK, I’m struggling to understand how the party can recover from such a damning exposé. More disturbing still is the willingness of its supporters to defend the indefensible.

Widespread institutional racism, xenophobia, sexism and hardline ethnonationalism. Reform has not cleaned up the party in any way. These bigots and extremists are being let through, in some cases because leaders in the party have turned a blind eye. Instead of tackling these major issues, Reform has attacked those uncovering it. This is unacceptable. No party seeking power should operate like this.

This Reform expose is exactly as I expected it to be, and as shocking as I expected it to be. This is who they really are. Anyone with a basic level of intelligence has known this for years. #itv #exposure #ReformUK

You can’t be English if you’re brown. You can’t be British if you’re Muslim. Reform UK is just a bunch of racist bigots with nothing to offer the British people but racism and bigotry.
Zia Yusuf is not British, a Reform UK activist suggested in remarks that were filmed during an undercover investigation. The party activist, who aspired to become a Reform MP, noted that the party’s home affairs spokesman was Muslim, adding: “You cannot be a Muslim and British… it’s like oil and water” 🔗: telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Yesterday 8 of us removed 93 bags of rubbish and 61 bags’ worth of large items from a section of the #GrandUnionCanal towpath in Southall & adjacent path. This is a bit much and we feel should not be left to volunteers. @deirdrecostigan we’d love to discuss preventative action!

Reform says “a handful” of bad apples slip through vetting. It’s not a handful. We’ve exposed Reform councillor after Reform councillor, and many of them are still in the party. Here are some of the worst 👇 hopenothate.org.uk/2026/10/1…

And Reform's statement said their councillors behaved "inappropriately" as if they'd made trivial breaches of manners. And surely Ticey lost his credibility a while ago when he said lawyers conducting Reform inquiry into C4News doc would be "independent"?
Remember what Reforms initial response was to what we've all seen today. It wasn't to condemn or disown the party members exposed. It was to attack the journalists exposing it.

That is the job of investigative journalists, Ben. That’s how they manage to hold people and parties and companies and public servants to account. Not just Reform. This how it must work. This type of journalism is to be applauded, not maligned.
Obviously some really unacceptable comments in the ITV story this evening, and it's worth saying that Reform HQ have already taken action where it's needed, investigating and removing people where their comments simply are not compatible with our values. Sometimes people can make legitimate points but phrase them wrong, and on some issues people are genuinely angry about the state of the country and they say things that are crass. That happens. However, it's also true that some comments are just abhorrent and unwelcome, and in those cases Reform has acted swiftly through disciplinary processes. There's no room for those things in our party. Whilst we continue to develop an increasingly robust vetting process, nobody can vet people for things that they might say in the future. A handful of individuals have slipped through the net, and that's a huge shame because it damages us all. However, as someone who works with our senior councillors every day I want to say that our party is filled with outstanding and dedicated people who are determined to fix our country and their communities. We can't let the tiny minority of bad derail all of the good, or let it deter us from that mission. It's also worth saying that, whilst accepting that some of these comments are totally unacceptable, the practice of a journalist lying their way in to people's trust, securing a job with the party with lies and dodgy documents, and secretly filming people with a view to publicly humiliating them is also abhorrent. I've never seen ITV or anyone else stoop to that level against any other party or organisation. It is not fair and surely cannot be legal to obtain those positions of trust by deception, for this purpose. I sincerely hope that some action is taken on that front. This cannot become an acceptable journalistic practice. Tomorrow I'm on the road meeting Councillors from the South West, supporting them to deliver key local objectives and helping them represent their residents to the best of their ability. That's the focus, and it's important to not lose sight of the fact that across the country Reform-run Councils are delivering major savings, lower taxes and better services for local people. That's why I'm doing this, and that's why so many of our councillors are working so hard every day. We carry on.

The scary thing is that there will be people watching ITV News' expose of the racism and misogyny amongst those elected Reform politicians and thinking "what's wrong with that?".

Robert Jenrick now talking about using “lethal force” to stop the small boats. Reform have lost their minds.
🚨"Deploy the Royal Marines into the Channel. If they need to use lethal force then they'll be able to do so. I think the problem would come to an end within a matter of days." @RobertJenrick says Reform is the only party with the "courage" to deal with the crisis. @JuliaHB1

I'm going to say this again in clear, simple terms so there can be no equivocation: Prior to Brexit, immigrants very rarely came to the UK in small boats because it is an extremely dangerous mode of transport. They came in lorries. Organised smuggling gangs knew that because there was free movement of goods between EU countries that there was a high chance that a lorry concealing immigrants would not be searched. I am sure you all remember that terrible case of a lorry-load of migrants from China and Vietnam that was abandoned in Essex. 31 men and 8 women died. The onset of Brexit meant that gradually, from approx 2018 onwards, more and more stringent checks began being carried out on lorries, as well as increased security at ferry ports - even Newhaven-Dieppe are surrounded with high barbed wire security fences, and every vehicle leaving Dieppe is opened and checked, so I imagine it must be pretty much the same at Calais and Boulogne as well. We have no idea how many people a year arrived in the UK unlawfully by lorry. The reason for this is because they were literally untrackable. Occasionally you would see a lorry stopped by the M2 or the M25 with a handful of people standing behind the safety barrier while the police had the blue lights on. But they certainly could not track what they didn't know about. The likelihood is that there were a great many more people getting into the country. The overwhelming majority of them would disappear into the undergrowth, never to be seen again until either a) they committed an offence b) they were caught in raids working illegally c) they either walked into a police station to claim asylum almost immediately or d) they popped over the parapet several years later because they wanted to regularise their status, either by marrying, or because they had children, or under the Long Residence rules - it used to be 15 years but is now 20 years. If you can prove you have been in the UK continuously for 20 years and have otherwise kept your nose clean, you are entitled to limited leave to remain. Eventually you might get settlement after 30 years - again, if you can prove you have always been in the country in that time. You will not get nationality if you entered the country illegally these days, though, unless you can show that there is something exceptional about your contribution to society. The small boats are different. The small boats are highly visible. The small boats - and their passengers - are very easy to spot, and very easy for the Coastguard and Border Force to track. A man from the BBC used to spend all his time stood on a cliff counting them post-Brexit. Yes, there will be the occasional one that slips through undetected. But that is the opposite of the way it was with lorry smuggling, where it was the occasional one that was actually detected, and the majority slipping through un-noticed. The irony of Farage, Lowe, Robinson, Tommo and all the other far-right screechers claiming we are unsafe because of "fighting age men" arriving on these boats is hilarious if it wasn't so desperate. When the boats arrive, every person is fingerprinted, screened and vetted as best we can, although another irony of Brexit is we no longer have automatic access to Europol except if we have grounds to suspect someone is a criminal rather than just an asylum seeker, so well done Brexit for that as well. Also, as we are no longer party to what's called the Dublin Agreement, whereas before we could make an application to France to take them back, and take responsibility for the asylum claim, now we are out of the EU we can't do that either. But at least we know who is here, we have their fingerprints, and we know who they are. In short, we are arguably safer from the "fighting age men" now that at any time in the past 30-odd years. The numbers are reducing. The numbers of crossings are reducing. I hold no candle for Labour these days, but at least they are processing the backlog the Tories (deliberately?) built up and those who don't have the right here are being deported as well. Boris Johnson is as full of shit as he always was. Feel free to share this.

Just 4 months after the local elections, Reform UK (RefUK) have lost 158 of their local councillors: -55 resigned -42 went Independent -28 defected -24 were kicked out -5 lost their seats -2 disqualified -2 suspended. Appalling record - and a waste of taxpayers’ money!

Be clear. Reform now has the resource to buy every billboard in the UK, blanket wall to wall advertising across written and broadcast media and saturation leafleting. The British will be blitzed into voting for the ultra right - against every best instinct. It is a dark moment.
