This is what the erosion of civic dialogue looks like in Hayes Valley right now.
Within hours of putting up our first OPEN HAYES signs, this man intentionally tore it down.
A local business owner who witnessed it was shocked — he confronted the guy, who admitted he did it simply because he disagreed with the message.
Disagreement is part of democracy. Deliberately destroying public speech you don’t like is not.
This is what the city has allowed the discourse to become.
Does anyone know this individual?

Before and after.
Because free speech is under siege in Hayes Valley we have issued a statement: hvsafe.com/5qq5
This is not about one poster. It’s about what that moment revealed.

Ah, it's the guy who thinks CA's budget just isn't big enough.

Hayes Street already had a public planning framework: the Market & Octavia Area Plan.
It considered commerce, walking, transit, loading and neighborhood circulation together. Before another closure renewal, revisit what the City planned.

Tomorrow California picks Gavin Newsom's replacement. Good.
I took this photograph of him almost 20 years ago. One night in February 2008 I ran into him in the Powell Street BART station. Mayor Newsom, a couple of staffers, no cameras, working the homeless panhandlers and selling them on his programs.
This was the guy who built his career on Care Not Cash. In 2004 SF cut homeless cash grants from $410 a month to $59 and promised shelter and services instead. He promised us back then a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness.
It didn't last. Today San Francisco still loads cash onto EBT cards that homeless recipients pull out at ATMs. You only have to be here two weeks to qualify for it. Walk down Sixth Street at Market and see where the money goes. Straight into the pockets of the cartels.
Then he failed up to governor. He inherited a boom and ran it down.
California has 181,934 homeless people. That's more than any other state and nearly 1 in 4 homeless Americans.
1.7 million more people have left California for other states than moved here since 2020.
Only 19% of California households can afford a median-priced home. You need $228,000 a year just to qualify. The middle class isn't being squeezed. It's being evicted.
Gas: $3.16 a gallon when he took office. $6.06 last month, $1.75 above the national average. Our gas tax is the highest in America and goes up every single July.
PG&E: rates up 45% since 2021, double inflation.
Who knew back then how badly he'd mismanage homelessness, first in San Francisco and then across all of California?
I hope he never gets anywhere near the White House. If he mismanaged our country the way he's mismanaged our state, it would be an unmitigated disaster.

Exactly. And what is this signaling to his constituents? Certainly not that he cares about you. That he’s willing to sacrifice and listen, take action…. If he were not elected to represent you/SF, this would not be an issue. But he is - and he’s flaunting his true allegiance.

Since taking office, Bilal has alienated a segment of Hayes Valley residents and small businesses who feel they have no meaningful representation at City Hall.
We've worked with numerous district supervisors over the years and have never encountered this level of sheer disregard. We've repeatedly tried to engage his office on consequential neighborhood decisions, yet meaningful dialogue remains elusive.
His political priorities are his choice. His responsibility to represent his constituents is not.

Disgraceful. This turns my stomach. 2 locals will die today from fentanyl poisoning. The data is available. This is social activism not leadership. Quote me.
I'm actually haunted by this. Instead of donating $1,000 to the poor, struggling Tenderloin families, seniors, and immigrants, @bilalmahmood ponies up for this man. in Michigan. if you live in district 5, I want to hear from you. DMs open. @SusanDReynolds

I’ve seen it all over SOMA and Market St, this style of bus stop attracts way too many drug addicts and it’s not safe. @SFMTA_Muni needs to remove it and stop adding new ones til @DanielLurie removes them all from the city
7th/Mission
Why does @SFMTA_Muni keep putting this style of bus stop here that just attracts drug users?
The stop around the corner on Mission was removed and helped reduce this misuse tremendously @DanielLurie @mattdorsey
"Please reopen the 22 bus stop that used to be at the corner of Guerrero and 16th St. For women to wait at 16th St. in Mission or 16th St. in Valencia can be super dangerous. It’s safer for us to wait at Guerrero and it’s unfair that you took away a safe bus stop from us. Please put that bus stop back."

Week 99. Another weekend of documented conditions on the 400 block of Hayes Street.
Our position remains unchanged: revoke the street closure permit and restore Hayes Street to normal public use.
Nearly 100 consecutive weeks of documentation.

.@bilalmahmood represents what may be the most fentanyl-ravaged district in America.
Hundreds of people overdose and die in his district every year. Kids step over bodies and needles on their way to school.
This past week @ICEgov arrested FOUR Honduran drug dealers poisoning his district.
Not one word of thanks.
Not one word at all.
Instead he's on X virtue signaling and bragging about cutting a $1,000 check to Abdul El-Sayed.
In MICHIGAN.
2,000 miles away.
His constituents are dying on the sidewalk and he's playing national party donor.
This is what passes for leadership in San Francisco.
Shameful.
I just donated $1,000 to El-Sayed.
Shame on Stevens. Let's win this.

Advocacy in the Cracks: What Hayes Valley Reveals About the System
A street closure. A censored community board. A permit loophole. An Entertainment Zone passed without real community consent. Five years in, we’re still being told this is “community-led.” We’ve seen something else entirely. hvsafe.com/aitc

Have serious doubts about Mahmood - SF neighborhoods are not putting up with supervisors that are not aligned with their community values - he should remember what happened to Joel Engardio who stopped representing his district’s neighborhood values.

Don’t do unto Hayes Valley what was done to the UGH.
The signs have always been there: the fight to preserve Hayes Street as a vital, functioning business corridor is being steamrolled by the very faction (and a Supervisor who has turned his back on our community) intent on shutting it down in favor of turning it into a playground.
To the many San Franciscans who continue to stand with us: we ♥️ you. (FairSF.com)

A public parcel that sits idle while the 400 block of Hayes is shut down 18 hours every weekend to entertain a small group.
This isn’t public space. It’s a shift in purpose: from serving merchants who pay high rents to subsidizing low-impact recreation.
We need common sense public space policies.
Not “temporary” closures with a hidden agenda.
