A housing subsidy benefit means very little if your salary still leaves you unable to afford a house. We need to look beyond the benefits package and ask whether people can actually afford a decent life on their salaries.

His point is: do interns contribute to medical aid, do they have transport allowance, housing and pension funds?
If you think this is about a three month allowance, then clearly you’re on the wrong horse . Please keep up !

True. A permanent Grade 15 cleaner starts around N$4,370 basic a month (plus housing and transport allowances) after years of service, while a graduate intern gets N$3,769 tax-free for six months. The numbers are uncomfortably close. What does it say about how we value loyalty, experience, and essential work when temporary credentials nearly match long term basic pay? The intern increase is welcome, but the permanent floor still needs a serious look @ngurare
YOUR HONOUR
The defence has submitted newspaper articles about cleaning campaigns as evidence in a debate about salaries. The accused is clearly confusing public sanitation with public sector remuneration.💀
I’m struggling to see how that proves anything about salary structures
This quoted post is unavailable.
So now a worker’s low salary is their fault because they didn’t study further? And even if everyone upgraded their qualifications, someone would still have to do the cleaning no ?
Also , since when did earning a decent salary become a privilege reserved for people with degrees?
Replying to @SaimaIngo
Why have you been working as a cleaner for years? After all, the government provides ample opportunities for employees to study and better their notches.
You can value education and still question unfair salary structures. Both conversations can co-exist !

You raised a valid point and I agree that something must be done about it, cc @ngurare
Just because someone is a cleaner doesn’t mean they’re uneducated. Some are qualified but haven’t been lucky enough to find jobs in their fields. Unfortunately government salaries also aren’t determined by qualifications, but by job grades..
A permanently employed cleaner in government works an entire month and earns almost the same salary as a graduate intern receiving N$3,769 (tax free). Imagine working for years, only for your salary to be almost equivalent to an internship allowance. Namibia are we okay ? 😭
INCREMENT: Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has announced a 22.4% increase in the monthly allowance for government interns, from N$2,200 to N$2,692.
Graduate interns will now receive N$3,769 per month, Ngurare announced at the International University of Management’s graduation ceremony in Windhoek.
The government internship programme has also been extended from three to six months, he said.
“We as a government have decided to revise the allowance our interns receive. We want to encourage government at all levels that our young people must be given an opportunity to grow,” Ngurare said.

Let’s be honest, incompetence in the public service is a real problem. Some people have positions they have absolutely no business occupying. 🌚
