Today is the National Day for the Victims of Communism. Communism killed more than 100 million people in the 20th century.
This memorial, The Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Prague, powerfully captures what communism does to the human person.

Today’s Guardian finds it "astonishing" that Russell Brand, convicted of one count of rape and three sexual assaults yesterday, was “embraced as a serious social commentator” when he returned to Britain in 2013. Embraced by whom, sorry?
The paper gives its own role in promoting brand Brand one single line, noting he had already written columns for it. Yesterday’s big Guardian piece on TV insiders said "Brand’s case has led to difficult questions for the BBC, Channel 4 and the production companies that worked with him." Hilarious...
On an unrelated note Russell Brand's 137 written contributions to the Guardian are still online - 17 of which are after 2013 and which concluded in February 2015.
Long after the Andrew Sachs voicemails, the paper ran his opinion on Thatcher the day after she died, ran a GQ awards column over a large chunk of the front page in September 2013, and ran his column blaming Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death on “extremely stupid drug laws.” Not to mention the fawning praise from Owen Jones and the entire Labour establishment, including the now-Prime Minister...
Today’s piece also sniffs that critics lavished praise on his memoir, quoting its tale of Brand trailing a classmate 200 miles to Wigan as an early warning sign.
That particular book was serialised in the Guardian.
In October 2014 the paper put on a ticketed Guardian Live event, with Owen Jones interviewing Brand. It was broadcast live from the Emmanuel Centre.
That day Jones penned a piece in the Guardian attacking the “all-too-smug, seen-it-all-before snottiness” aimed at Brand. Two months later George Monbiot named him a hero of 2014, calling him “the best thing that has happened to the left in years”.
Alan Rusbridger, the Guardian's editor from 1995 to 2015, claimed in Prospect Magazine in 2023: "I only met him once, when he was writing a popular football column for the Guardian, along with the occasional commentary piece." Funny, seeing as the football column was pre-2010 and there is a photo of them snugly on the sofa together at the Guardian’s morning conference in August 2013...

What a stupid day today has been for Britain.
Migrant home sec asks migrants about migration. Decides migration is fine and you can pay for it. Calls that fair because she’s a migrant or something.
Descendants of freed slaves demand reparations from the descendants of the people who freed them. Usurper PM open to it. Because… vibes?
Oh. And don’t forget to make sure you’ve got 3 days worth of bottled water and baked beans in case everything you’ve paid for stops working. Resilience something something.

BREAKING
The OBR says the tax raid on landlords - increasing property income tax rates by another 2% - will:
1) Make it less likely that people become landlords, ‘reducing long term rental supply’ and leading to a ‘steady long-term rise in rents’
2) See landlords simply pass on costs to tenants, increasing rents

I don’t think this has had the press coverage it deserves. It is insane.
The right to decide who enters Britain belongs to the British state, not to whichever charity has the Home Office’s ear.
The opportunities for favouritism, nepotism and corruption are obvious. A well-connected individual with well-placed supporters will secure nomination over others facing greater persecution. Dodgy intermediaries may well demand money from families seeking sponsorship. Charities could become vehicles for bringing over relatives, associates or even political allies. It risks creating an entire system of private patronage.
I go into all this in more detail here: thecritic.co.uk/labours-gold…

Here we go again. Above inflation rise to the minimum wage which will cause even more pressure on businesses and feed into inflation. It will make life even less affordable for the lowest paid.
Cue the usual "your business isn't viable if you cant afford to pay a living wage" posts from the terminally thick that would struggle to run a bath, never mind a business or employ people.
Here, for anyone that can be bothered to educate themselves even in the slightest, is why the circa 50% rise in minimum wage in the last 6 years has made life less affordable and contributed to the cost of living crisis.
Minimum wage employee 2020:
Total cost to employer (wages + NI + pension): £18,460
Employee can make 18,460 widgets in a year.
Cost per widget (ignoring any other cost or profit): £1
Take-home pay: £15,202
Widgets the employee can afford: 15,202
2027 min wage of of £13.20:
Total cost to employer (wages + NI + pension): £29,436
Widgets made in a year (same productivity): 18,460
Cost per widget: £1.59
Take-home pay: £22,050
Widgets the employee can afford: 13,868
They’ve had a 45% increase in take-home pay but can afford 9% fewer widgets.
This is why you are worse off. Now factor in other business costs, higher corporation tax, higher energy costs, higher risk from new legislation, maintaining pay differential, etc. etc. etc..
Yet the thick "yOuR bUsInEsS iSnT ViAbLe iF yOu cAnT aFfoRd AnOtHeR 50p" brigade are out in force championing this.
Just increase the tax free allowance and reduce spending, for f***s sake. They are just driving businesses off a cliff in the UK.

Call me old fashioned, but I think a charity established to maintain London's bridges should maintain London's crumbling bridges.
Instead, £840 *million* of its endowment has been spaffed on spurious “social justice” causes.

Just look at that the outlandish majesty of that superb jacket. I am currently obsessed with the 80s television series of Sherlock Holmes starring the unbeatable Jermey Brett. I'll discuss this more in the future. But the attire, script, articulation, and wonderful old scenes really make me smile. This outfit is genuinely godly. I may have to start giving my tours and filming documentaries in 19th century gentleman clothing.

🎯 Russia is a failed nation, a terror state, a mafia pretending to be a country, a people infected with an imperial virus, a gas station with nukes that barely has any gas left, a Chinese vassal that needs perpetual war to stay intact. It should be quarantined, not elevated.
This has been Putin's dream for years: That his country, with GDP per capita lower than Poland, unable to conquer Donbas since 2014, will be treated as an equal to the US and China.
