Somewhere warm to take their children. Overnight, floodwater destroyed tens of thousands of tents and soaked or swept away the few belongings families had managed to carry from one displacement to the next. Now people are looking at one another, asking where they’re supposed to go. Their neighbors’ tents are flooded too. Families need somewhere dry to sleep tonight. By 9 a.m., reports of flooded tents at Gaza City’s port, west of Deir al-Balah, in Jabalia and Beit Lahia, north of Nuseirat camp, and in Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis were coming in. This is the toll of the first heavy rain on families who have been forced to live in worn tents and makeshift shelters. We never imagined that after a single night of rain, so many of the shelters families called home would be washed away. After being displaced again and again, families had made a home out of whatever they could find. Now the bedding is soaked, the ground is mud, and parents are trying to find somewhere dry for their children to sleep. And the rain is still falling. And this should make us angry, furious and outraged! 🚨Urgent support needed 🚨 chuffed.org/project/113222-t… Overnight, thousands of tents collapsed under the storm, with dozens of displacement camps now completely underwater. The rain is expected to continue until Monday. This is the FOURTH winter that Palestinians in Gaza have faced under genocide. After years of bombardment, displacement and destruction, families who have already lost their homes are now watching their only remaining shelter collapse under the rain. Think about what that means: parents trying to keep their children dry, families desperately trying to salvage their belongings from floodwater, people who have already been displaced repeatedly being left with nowhere safe to go. There is something profoundly wrong with a world in which people are forced to fight this hard for the basic right to shelter. They should never have been put in this position. The Sameer Project is already replacing dozens of destroyed tents and arranging truckloads of sand to help absorb water in flooded camps. But the need is far greater than our current resources. We urgently need funding to provide higher-quality, more durable tents. These cost $700, compared to $200 for lower-quality alternatives. Many families are refusing the cheaper tents because they know they will likely break again. We are also looking to buy hundreds of tarps and blankets. They cannot keep starting from nothing every time a storm hits. We are asking you to help us do something tangible. We can’t sink into helplessness. Help us get families out of the floodwater and into shelter that can actually protect them. We cannot stop the storm, but we can refuse to stand by while families face it without protection.
