If you monitor a storm east of 106ยฐW, you have a better view with the GOES-16 satellite, and if you monitor a storm west of 106ยฐW, you have a better view with the GOES-18 satellite.

Twenty years ago today, Super Typhoon #Cimaron (2006) struck Luzon. This impressive "140-kt" ๐ storm had a MODIS TIR eye temp of 25.2ยฐC and WV eye temp of -15.8ยฐC, values commonly found in upper-echelon TCs. Probably the missing โฅ155-kt Philippine landfall between Zeb (1998) and Megi (2010).

This is one of the most terrifying thought-experiments for us in the Atlantic Basin.
If you put Super Typhoon Champi in the Gulf and compare her to the strongest known Atlantic Hurricanes, none of them will be able to match her combination of extreme winds (185+ MPH) and huge core size.
The West Pacific, without contest, is where the most monstrous storms on Earth are born.

๐ฎ Comparing El Ninoโs Current State: 2026 makes 1997 look like Childโs Play!
Who lived in #Florida in 1997-1998? I was a whipper-snapper weatherman in #Tampa back then.
It was a crazy winter. The strongest El Niรฑo on record brought Floridaโs worst #tornado outbreak and more than triple the normal winter rainfall. ๐ง๏ธ
In the image below I made an apples to apples comparison of sea surface temperature anomalies on Oct 20th. I thought it would reveal a closer comparison. Instead it shows 2026 is simply in a league of its own. Thus we expect big impacts on the winter weather. Itโs important to note though that every El Niรฑo event is different. We know it will be very active and wet in Florida, but we simply donโt know exactly how and where it will materialize. Tornadoes are more likely, but not guaranteed. It will be rainier than normal, but 3-4X like 1997? We just donโt know yet. #elnino #elniรฑo

Really cool view of Subtropical Storm Josephine today.
Some lightning in the outer bands.
I really hate the @CIRA_CSU slider sometimes. Yesterday the images disappeared at around 04:00 UTC and today they were already gone by 01:30 UTC. So I lost a lot of images I wanted to save. Is there anyone I can contact to still get them? I am both annoyed and desperate now.
