Schools should educate, not indoctrinate. They should encourage disciplined thought, not impose political orthodoxies. Read and share: bit.ly/sueIdeologyMatters Our new booklet, Why Transgender Ideology Matters, examines government overreach, parental authority and the politicisation of Scottish education. #BattleFest

The book is excellent, well worth reading and chatting about with friends, colleagues or parents. Scottish education is a pale shadow of what it was prior to, the misnamed, CfE.
Scotland's declining educational performance demands more than another round of reforms. Lindsay Paterson's latest book raises a fundamental question: has Curriculum for Excellence weakened the place of knowledge in our schools? Read here: bit.ly/sue175fh Can standards recover without restoring it?

A mum's post about her son being taught he could be "born in the wrong body" has reached 30,000 people this weekend. Here in the UK we have the same problem both sides of the border. Teach children how to think, not indoctrinate them with Queer theory. Excellent work here from @ScotUnionEd.

It is indeed not for the state to dictate the conversations between parents & their children. This is one of the most appalling pieces of legislation to come before Parliament @SpeechUnion @BinTheBill_ @bindelj @murdo_fraser @WRNScotland @WomensRightsNet @CMochan

This is one of the most illiberal, invasive and appalling pieces of legislation ever to come before Parliament. The Conversion Practices Bill isn’t about preventing gay children from being abusively coerced into being straight. That is already rightly illegal. It will criminalise well-intentioned conversations between parents and gender-confused children, discussions with therapists, and religious leaders sharing their faith’s teachings with their congregations. A parent could face up to five years in prison simply for trying to dissuade their child from embarking on irreversible, dangerous and life-changing medical pathways before the age of 18. In his letter to the pre-legislative scrutiny committee, the Minister for Equalities attempts to reassure us that the bill respects “freedom of religion and parental rights”. It does no such thing. So much for the Labour Government’s promise to tread more lightly on our lives. It is not the state’s role to dictate what conversations parents can have with their young children around the dinner table. Parents know best — not ministers. Read the letter below 👇

Impartiality in education is vital yet so misunderstood sometimes wilfully, and sometimes because of the influence of Critical Race Theory & Identity politics which work to disavow antisemitism as a new form of racism. But schools should be treating antisemitism as a severe breach of a vital ethical code: treat all in school with curtesy and politeness (even if you don't like or respect what they think). A question of moral courage and practical consistency on part of the adults rather than more training: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c623…. . fyi @ScotUnionEd @ProtectTeach

Right from the start DDU has stressed the need for far greater concern and enforcment of Sections 406 & 407 of the Education Act. There are still too many schools where leaders/staff think hitching 'being kind' to using partisan political content (from open borders to trans ideology) is ok - it really isn't. This is a good start, but teacher training needs radical overhaul. @ScotUnionEd @ProtectTeach thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…

WHY WE NEED BATTLE OF IDEAS FESTIVAL 2026 Whatever the problem, too often politics favours technical fixes or harping back to old models – nationalisation, constitutional tinkering, electoral reform, institutional re-engineering and endless new laws, many aimed at restricting freedoms. What is missing in these debates is us – the demos. Genuine democracy means more than putting an X in a box. It should mean the fullest discussion of all issues that matter. That’s why this festival’s programme ranges widely, from cultural boycotts to womb transplants, the rise of the femosphere to the trashing of valued rural traditions. The Battle of Ideas is democracy in action: a place where political conflicts, cultural clashes and moral dilemmas are debated rather than simply managed. Too often, contemporary societies shy away from difficult questions, while the answers are assumed in advance – or imposed from above. Not here. At this, the original free-speech festival, the mottos FREE SPEECH ALLOWED and FREE THINKERS WELCOME apply. Here, speaking your mind and arguing freely are treated not as dangerous indulgences, but as essential. Look through the programme and you will find topics deemed off-limits elsewhere, but presented here as opportunities for people to have their say. So use the festival to escape any intellectual silos or political tribes. Engage with the issues – and with those who disagree with you. Relearn the fine art of disagreement… and perhaps some worthwhile consensus on tricky issues will follow DETAILS - battleofideas.org.uk/program… TICKETS - battleofideas.org.uk/battle-…

🚨IT’S LIVE. After months of research, evidence review and legal analysis, Protect and Teach CIC has published its examination of the Draft Conversion Practices Bill (England and Wales). 769 pages of evidence and legal analysis. 8 pages for Parliament. 9 questions for parliamentary scrutiny. Protect and Teach concludes that the evidential case for new criminal legislation has not been made and the Bill should not proceed. The review examines the Government’s evidence base, existing law, prevalence and harm claims, parents and safeguarding, therapy and healthcare, legal certainty, potential chilling effects, human rights, international comparisons and whether the proposed legislation can be meaningfully evaluated. Read the main publication, download the 8-page Policy Evidence Briefing, access the full 769-page review, or download our Write to Your MP template: Why the Evidence Does Not Support the Draft Conversion Practices Bill protectandteach.org/why-the-… Read it. Hint: it doesn’t include EDI indoctrination. Have you learned nothing from Jason Arday’s case? FYI @SpeechUnion @ScotUnionEd

Leaving aside the question of Prevent and its use in schools, this case is a good illustration of why the Equality Act is so unfit for purpose. Subconscious bias, assessed through language, should not be for tribunals to determine - it can only further enfeeble our practice of speaking freely. @SpeechUnion @ScotUnionEd cloisters.com/latest/wbd3fzi…

You cannot wave away low performing school systems by saying 'poverty' and 'COVID' (in 2026!). Evidence shows us that the three pillars of school standards- curriculum, behaviour, and pedagogy- are something we know how to improve massively. Ironically, and tragically, the principal beneficiaries of this understanding are the children from the most disadvantaged circumstances.

I've weighed in on the great vocational education debate. From what we can see of the govt plans, I think they will repeat mistakes of the past. Also, we need to retire the phrase "parity of esteem". It's not helping. substack.nomoremarking.com/p…
