The complete lack of social order engenders low trust, leading to an environment where individuals are far less likely to start businesses or raise families. It also propels the smartest and most ambitious of South Africa to just leave.

She grew up among Jews and spends most Friday nights at Shabbat dinners with her Jewish friends.
Now she's watching her "normal" friends turn antisemitic jokes into everyday conversation.
This is how it always starts. Not with laws. With jokes nobody bothers to stop.

I grew up around primarily Jewish people.
It wasn’t till about two years ago when I realized a majority of people are actually incredibly antisemitic. Even my “normal” friends would consistently make jokes at the expense of the Jewish people.
The amount of people who would make antisemitic jokes in my presence, has grown within the last two years.
But the jokes don’t stop at antisemitism, they carried on notions of white greatness and white nationalism on a grand scale.
I am genuinely disturbed at the sheer number of white people who treat this behavior as normal, when I was raised among people where I was the minority and the only girl to celebrate Christmas in my class.
I celebrate Shabbat with my jewish friends on a majority of Fridays, I am genuinely in shock at this behavior. We have a huge antisemitism problem in this country.

I definitely think there's always room for criticism of a politician, of strategy, of policies. But when the go to talking points are that Israel is engaging in a genocide, when Hamas is painted as freedom fighters, when the question is not how to find peace but whether Israel has a right to exist, when Israel is cast as an Apartheid and a colonial state, and friends and allies of Jews and Israel are accused of being bought and paid for, then what we're dealing with is not simple political disagreements, it is all the things that have always composed the evil of antisemitism.
To say this is just about Netanyahu is to bury your head in the sand about what people are actually saying and doing.
