Next up, it was testing of the hold down clamps, with a few individual retract/extend moves and a simultaneous retract...followed by just the one clamp extending and retracting (at least one *visible* clamp)...which seemed odd.

Success! NASA’s DUST-III sounding rocket launched from Alaska’s Poker Flat Research Range at 9:30pm AKDT Oct. 21 (1:30am EDT Oct. 22). 🚀
In microgravity, its payload made cosmic dust, the tiny grains that build planets.

ALT A long-exposure photo captures a rocket launch at night as a single bright streak of light rising straight up from a snowy launch site at Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska. The streak climbs past a dark ridgeline and ends in a glowing burst where it meets a low layer of clouds, lighting the overcast sky a warm amber. Snow-covered forest and small launch buildings are visible at the base.

Someone out there might appreciate the amount of effort it took to get this image. Others will look at it and say ehh. Believe me. Be sure to SUPPORT all those crazy souls covering Starbase. It's hard and getting harder. Give'm a like and a follow - 10/21/26

It's being built to take a beating. Upgrading from our heritage high temperature ceramic ramp, the new facility features a stainless steel, water-cooled ramp to absorb the extreme heat and force of engine exhaust, test after test. And it's designed for all-weather testing, meaning a predictable test cadence come rain, wind, or shine.

Demand for Electron and HASTE missions continues to grow and our manifest has never been busier. To increase launch cadence, streamlining production and test operations is key. The new facility will cut stack test time in half, from 2–3 days down to less than a day.

First, what's a stack test?
Before Electron's first or second stage flies, we fire it here on Earth as an integrated system, with Rutherford engines igniting and plumbing and avionics all working together just as they will on launch day. This process is called a static fire or a stack test. It’s one of the final tests before we move into wet dress rehearsal on the launch pad in Wallops or Mahia, and then onto launch day. Every single Electron and HASTE rocket launched so far have been through this process.
(This video features the existing stack facility, not the new one)

High cadence launch needs high cadence testing. With more than 100 launches in backlog (and counting), we're building a new state-of-the-art test facility to accelerate static fire stack testing for Electron and HASTE rockets.

The LR11000 that had previously been lifting cladding panes to Gigabay has now relocated to the interior of the building. This could be for internal cladding initially.

Been a while since I've posted a timelapse of Falcon 9 Second Stage "musical chairs" action at SpaceX McGregor. This afternoon, the next Stage 2 arrived and switched places with the last Stage 2, which soon departed for its upcoming mission at a space port near you!

$SPCX is in talks to secure at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites as Elon Musk looks to turn Starlink Mobile into a 4th nationwide wireless carrier.
Combined with its growing satellite network and recently acquired spectrum, those sites could give SpaceX the ground coverage needed to compete directly with $T, $VZ and $TMUS.
