The 80% domestic figure is real but only for a small, biased slice of traceable long guns mostly in RCMP-policed areas (outside major ON/QC cities). It does not prove domestic guns are the “bigger” driver of the gun crime that matters most to public safety — smuggled handguns in urban centres.
Local data from the highest-crime areas shows the total reverse. Presenting the narrow RCMP subset as disproving the smuggling narrative (or as evidence that “domestic is bigger”) is classic cherry-picking and selection bias. It supports calls for more restrictions on legal domestic owners while downplaying enforcement against smuggling and illegal markets.
For years, the same voices pushed the same script: The vast majority of crime guns are smuggled across the border, so the only fix is tighter border controls. That narrative was always flawed. Ottawa says it CAN'T tell Canadians how many firearms were actually collected in Waterloo. The only police service in Ontario that agreed to confiscate banned firearms. The collection period is over. WRPS said previously that upwards of 800 firearms were declared. The federal agreement with WRPS was $899,300 and was to cover the declared firearms in its jurisdiction.
That’s more than $1,100 per declared firearm to the police, BEFORE compensation to firearm owners. Are they embarrassed by low numbers as owners changed their minds about confiscations and withdrew?
