Me in a magic shower of instant hot water in my house with A/C, after a big breakfast with all my healthy kids, living a life that the vast majority of humanity across time would give their left foot for: "Dear God, life is hard, I could really use some more money"

Teal is named after a particular duck's head stripe, which is iridescent, so it doesn't have an unambiguous reference color. Depending on the viewing angle you can see something clearly green or clearly blue. 3/

TIL spiders, butterflies, crabs and birds can have their ovules' polar bodies fertilized, and if one fuses early with an opposite-sex zygote, you can end up with an animal that is split male/female right down the middle. What a cool genetic accident. Doesn't happen in mammals.

Only a tiny fraction of the world’s mosquito species prey on humans. All of these are invasive across essentially their entire range, having tagged along with humans as we moved around the world. Multiple careful studies say that eliminating these species would have little or no impact on the environment. However, it would save at least a million human lives a year, and get rid of a constant source of discomfort that prevents people from safely spending as much time outside as they would prefer. Malaria is only one of dozens of diseases, many potentially fatal, spread by mosquitoes. Gene drives can safely and relatively inexpensively eliminate these parasitic insects; we can create male mosquitoes that can only have male offspring and which then crash the population. It’s well past time that we did it.

Virtues are verbs
So easy and humbling to forget how courage is a virtue we have to keep choosing. We can be wiser, safer, more comfortable, and still have to relearn that being afraid is intertwined into being courageous and not a failure state to eliminate. Battle against your fear and you’ll lose the fight you meant to win embracing it

Whenever I want more jewellery I tell my husband I have a mineral deficiency.
I suspect that a large amount of dehydration is actually mineral deficiencies. Not that I really know anything, but it's something to think about.

a sad mistake people sometimes make, once they have the precious spark of something good, is they throw too much kindling on it too fast and snuff it out that way

Not mentioned much in the very interesting piece --- Hull had excellent fibre broadband earlier (and still has no access to Openreach afaik) because it never allowed the nationalisation of its telecoms network. Also cream coloured phone boxes as a result. ft.com/content/4d25e026-d91d…
