Steve Bell was sacked by The Guardian over this cartoon of Benjamin Netanyahu.
Just in: IPSO has refused to investigate the Telegraph cartoon of Mothin Ali, the Green Party's Muslim deputy leader, grinning over a knife and fork at the severed head of Zack Polanski, its Jewish leader, who is drawn with a hooked nose. Nearly 1,200 of you complained.
IPSO's reason: the cartoon is about two individuals, so only Mothin and Zack can complain. How racist the drawing is doesn't come into it.
IPSO did not have to do this, and it has done the opposite before.
IPSO's rules let it take up a complaint from people other than the person written about, when the breach is significant, and there is a substantial public interest in looking at it.
In July 2023 it used that power. It ruled that Jeremy Clarkson's Sun column about the Duchess of Sussex was sexist, after complaints from two women's charities, the Fawcett Society and the WILDE Foundation. The Duchess did not complain.
The Telegraph's editor, Chris Evans, chairs the committee that writes the Editors' Code, which is the rulebook IPSO enforces.
The Telegraph is still selling prints of the cartoon today.
IPSO's rule says it may take up a complaint like this, not that it must. So this was a choice.
Picture a school. One boy draws two classmates, a Muslim boy and a Jewish boy. He gives the Jewish boy a hooked nose and puts his head on a plate, and draws the Muslim boy about to eat it. He pins the picture to the noticeboard and sells copies at the gate.
A thousand pupils go to the head teacher. She tells them she can only act if the two boys in the picture come to her themselves.
So the picture stays on the board, and every Muslim and Jewish child in the school walks past it each morning. The boy who drew it learns he can do it again.
And the rulebook the head teacher is reading from was written by a committee his dad chairs.
Nobody would say that head teacher is protecting the children. She is protecting the boy who drew it.
That is what IPSO has done. It says it regulates the Telegraph, and it has just told nearly 1,200 people that a racist cartoon in a paper it regulates is not its business unless the two men drawn in it come and ask.

My close friend, who is also our team’s photographer, was injured in a strike while walking down a street in Gaza City.
What happened to him reminded me of a terrifying reality we face every single day: in Gaza, we never know whether we will make it back home alive or whether our families will receive the news that we have been killed.
We leave our homes without knowing if it will be the last time we see our families. We walk through the streets, trying to take care of the simplest daily necessities, with no guarantee that we will reach our destination safely.
Imagine living in a place where simply walking down the street could cost you your life, where every day you face the possibility that you might never return to your family and could instead become another name among the dead.
This is the terror we live with in Gaza. There is nowhere we can truly feel safe. Even the streets and roads we walk along every day are no longer safe.
We have been forced to live with the constant possibility of death, trying to hold on to life in a reality that denies us even the most basic of rights: to leave our homes and return to them safely.

One of the most absurd arguments against a wealth tax is that the ultra-wealthy are simply successful, and the rest of us aren't. As demonstrated here by @kafkaswife.
It completely ignores how concentrated wealth translates into concentrated power.
Through lobbying, political donations, funding think tanks, media ownership and direct access to government, concentrated wealth brings the power to shape policies, protect profits and influence the very economic system that enables it to accumulate in the first place.
And nowhere is this more apparent than in times of crisis.
Financial crashes, pandemics, wars and climate breakdown present extraordinary opportunities for wealth accumulation, while the economic, social and environmental costs are borne by wider society.
And that's why a wealth tax alone doesn't go anyway near far enough.
We need to break the grip that concentrated wealth and powerful industries have over politics itself, because financial success should never entitle anyone to greater power over our collective future.

No, the Dahiye Doctrine he coauthored is much more than this: it represents an outright war crime. It also regards civilians in “supportive areas” as legitimate targets. It’s not just about blowing up buildings; it’s focused on eliminating people, non combatants, as well.

Normally when a murderer kills someone and tells the world "God told me to do it", they usually get tried in a court of law, and end up in a maximum security wing of a prison for the criminally insane.
When Israel does the same thing to hundreds of thousands of people, they get assistance from Western governments to kill more.
I worked in the NHS for 14 years. Now doctors like me who speak about Gaza are being reported to the GMC, written up in the press, and left fighting for our careers. This is my experience, and why I won't be silenced.

Believe me that I don't exaggerate when I say this: I am thankful to be alive and hear these words said where Western audiences can hear them. This monologue is as revolutionary and meaningful as Rosa Park' refusal to move to the black people section of a bus, 71 years ago in Montgomery, Alabama.
Lubna Speitan seals her place in the chronicles of the struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom and dignity - now followed and supported by billions of people around the world.
I waited so long, so eagerly, to hear these transformative words; all of humanity did. EVery schoolboy and schoolgirl in the world need to know this
Watch this.
Lubna Speitan, author of the Greens4Palestine motion “Zionism is racism”, spells out the central obscenity of our age – the grotesque inversion whereby the victims of ethnic cleansing, Apartheid and genocide must constantly fend off accusations from their tormentors that it is they who are the racists.
“We as Palestinians are being silenced and gaslit and vilified [as we] witness the annihilation, the cold-blooded murder of our families, of our people… our children burnt with phosphorus, having to endure amputations with no anaesthetic, having their limbs torn and shredded, their bodies burnt by phosphorus, being starved to death … And to have to sit here … and try to bury my feelings so I can eloquently and diplomatically shield my anger, my rage, my anguish that every Palestinian is feeling, is an insult.” /1

This morning, as @SkyNews lionised Marine Le Pen at her RN speech, they mentioned so quickly you could barely notice it that there had been "some protests" at the event, before quickly moving on to other aspects, including Bardella.
The "protests" were from France's Jewish Student's Movement, because Bardella has recently been all over the news because of some seriously antisemitic social media posts a few years ago.
Can you imagine for a minute if the Jewish Student's Union protested at either a Labour or Green event, or if these student protesters had been at an LFI event in France? We wouldn't hear the end of it for days, weeks even.
But the Far Right in both countries seem to get a free pass on actual Jew hate (as opposed to simply attacking Israel) every damn time.
Placée en garde à vue après une action pacifique au congrès du RN, Élise Hirsch, vice-présidente de l’@uejf, dénonce les violences que ses membres ont subies alors qu’ils venaient dénoncer les écrits antisémites de Jordan Bardella.

🚨🇷🇸Serbia's winning Student List announces end to arms exports to conflict zones - NO MORE WEAPONS TO UKRAINE OR ISRAEL.
The Student List, which won yesterday's parliamentary election in Serbia, announced it would halt all arms exports to countries involved in armed conflicts.
This would put an end to weapons or ammo being sent to Ukraine and Israel, either directly or through third countries.
"Serbian weapons will no longer be used to spill the blood of innocent people."

On Wednesday. The day after Israels election. Israelis will wake up and still be in a racist, settler colonial state built on theft, rape & murder of Palestinians. Occupation, apartheid & genocide will not end with a change of prime minister. Zionism, not the leader is the issue!

Opposing Israel's genocide of Palestinians is not antisemitic.
No matter how many Jews are upset by people finally talking about it, it's about Israel and Zionism, not about Jews as Jews.
All Jews can choose to stop supporting Israel. No one has to keep doing that.
If @AbdulElSayed truly means what he says about treating the Jewish community as he would treat his own children, then he would immediately condemn this dangerous ad as outrageously antisemitic and demand that it be taken down.
If not, then he’s full of shit.

UK Lawyers for Israel, whose chief executive suggested that starving Gaza could help reduce obesity there, is now going after the charities trying to help feed Palestinians in Gaza.
The British press is amplifying every complaint with misleading headlines which do not represent reality.
First MSF. Now Restless Beings. These are organisations that work around the world for people in desperate need, and they are being put under Charity Commission scrutiny because UKLFI asked for it.
How far will they go in service of Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza?
The irony is that UKLFI is two entities, and one of them is a registered charity that the Charity Commission has already had to look into itself.

Exactly. Marx called it decades ago: every capitalist wants his own workers paid as little as possible, and everyone else’s workers flush with cash to spend at his store. Turns out the workers and the customers are the same people. Who could have predicted this? (Karl, in 1857.)

My daughter Kiraz is still living in a state of horrific shock because of what happened right before her eyes yesterday. It is a scene that will never be erased from her memory, and a terror that will continue to haunt her even after the explosions stop.
The explosion was only a few meters away from us. In a matter of seconds, everything turned upside down. Dust and smoke engulfed the area, shrapnel flew all around us, and everything turned into a terrifying scene, as if death had surrounded us from every direction.
The blast was so deafening and powerful that it was unbearable. Kiraz’s eardrums were ruptured, and blood began flowing from her ears, while we struggled to comprehend what had happened and desperately tried to survive.
From yesterday until this very moment, my daughter has been unable to sleep. Her heart is still racing with fear, and she is still experiencing the same terror, as if the explosion were happening before her eyes over and over again.
Kiraz is just a little girl who should have been sleeping peacefully in her father’s arms, not trembling in fear of death. She should have been living her childhood in safety, not witnessing death with her own eyes and hearing an explosion that nearly destroyed both her life and her father’s in a single moment.
I do not know how to explain to my little girl what happened, or how to reassure her that she is safe when I cannot even guarantee that we will survive the next explosion.
We miraculously survived yesterday, but the terror Kiraz experienced did not end when the explosion stopped. Its effects still linger in her little body, robbing her of sleep and stealing away her sense of safety.
What crime has my little girl committed to be forced to face death at such a young age? Why must my daughter learn the meaning of terror before she ever gets to experience the meaning of safety?
To this very moment, we do not know how we survived certain death. All I know is that I was only a few meters away from losing my daughter, and the thought that I nearly lost her in a single moment will haunt me for the rest of my life.
