This dude is a below average MLS Coach and so many of us were ostracized for thinking he shouldn’t be given the keys to the USMNT for the most important cycle in USMNT history lol what a joke
“People complain about not having promotion relegation, there's still that pressure that if you're not performing, you're not going to be around.”
Former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter talks about pressure coaching in MLS. He’s also not sold on pro/rel idea.
Berhalter was speaking on GOAL’s The Late run 🗣️
“You see already how many coaches have been dismissed,” he spoke about pressure coaching in MLS.
“You know, a good friend of mine, Nico Estévez, got fired from Austin. And he's never not made the playoffs.
“He coached two years in Dallas, they made the playoffs, he got fired midway through the third year.
“He made the playoffs the first year with Austin, beginning of the second year, they weren't in a good position, he got fired. So, like, he didn't even have an opportunity to fail.
“But again, it's economical. You know, if the owners are investing money, they want to see a winning product on the field. Sometimes, you know, expectations don't equal reality, right?
“Maybe sometimes the squad's not good enough to get the results, and you get fired.
“But there is more pressure, even though people complain about not having promotion relegation, there's still that pressure that if you're not performing, you're not going to be around.
“Do I think MLS needs that promotion and relegation? I think it's complicated because you're talking about families and owners that have supported the league for so long, have invested so much money in.
“Why should they lose all their investment, you know, because they've been carrying this league for the last 20 years?
“So I'm not 100% there yet.”
Berhalter is now the coach of Chicago Fire, and made the playoffs last year.
Lmao the narratives were so ridiculous. Messi not winning the golden ball is quite literally one of the biggest robberies in the history of the sport.

I think the amusing bit is that after all these allegations of 'VARgentina' and 'the tournament is fixed for Infantino's special boy Messi' and so on; Messi really did get robbed off the Golden Ball after one of the single greatest individual performances in any World Cup ever.
