RIP, @randypicker: for almost 40 years, he taught @UChicagoLaw in subjects as varied as bankruptcy and antitrust. He generously asked me to guest-lecture in his “Platforms and Networks” class in 2022; I learned the most from all the exchanges. A kind, thoughtful, brilliant man.

Check out ATLAS (v1.0). This is a wide-ranging report on the use of AI, both at work and at home. It's exciting to see AI diffuse to use cases outside of knowledge work in particular. This is AI adoption at massive scale... usage will deepen as well.

1/ The strongest argument for banning open-weights models? Written in 1907. Theodore Vail had just retaken AT&T and declared competition a waste: "Universal Service, One system, One policy" was the only way to guarantee a return on capital.

For those who don’t know, Bell Labs was not really a corporate research lab in the modern sense. It was funded by monopoly profits from AT&T as a sort of public good in return. In fact, patenting INCREASED overall once AT&T was broken up and Bell Labs started its decline.

"The breakup indeed reduced patenting by the Bell Laboratories but not the number of important patents. Most importantly, the decrease in the number of Bell patents was more than compensated for by the increase in patenting of other companies" ~@Watzinger, @MonikaSchnitzer (2022)

Why fund highly novel research? It can improve the evolution of knowledge by guiding future researchers. We propose a model in which researchers decide which questions to address and at what intensity to search for the answer based on existing knowledge. econometricsociety.org/publi…
