At the โRoadmap for AI and Sustainability in Indiaโ Roundtable organised by the Chintan Research Foundation in collaboration with @_DialogueIndia, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers convened to deliberate on the critical intersections of #AI and #Sustainability.
A central insight from the discussion was clear: sustainability cannot be an afterthought. It must be embedded into AI infrastructure by design.
From data centres to compute systems, participants emphasised that #AI should be viewed not just as infrastructure, but as an ecosystem: spanning hardware, software, data, energy, and institutions.
The discussion also highlighted:
- The urgent need for policy coherence, including a national framework for developing AI infrastructure, which should include sustainability indicators
- The importance of transparency and standardised metrics such as energy and water use efficiency.
- A growing shift towards efficient compute models and heterogeneous architectures
- The role of ecosystem collaboration from startups to government to drive innovation
- The need to balance rapid scale with equitable and sustainable resource use
The roundtable also marked the unveiling of the Discussion Paper prepared by CRF and The Dialogue Team.
