This is the thing. We could implement a lot of the proposed (well-intentioned) solutions to gerrymandering, and we'd still have gerrymandering. And even if we DID somehow prevent it, our winner-take-all system is responsible for a lot of the problems we blame on gerrymandering.

My personal hunch: if you're looking for upsets, they're more likely to be in places w/ lots of secular whites & independents (i.e. the Midwest) than in the Deep South. Not totally unrelated: my lunch locale today.

Bankhead is from the part of the left that hates political power. To someone like this, campaigns are about mindlessly repeating what your insular community wants to hear. Trying to win power and use it to help people involves strategic thinking, and is therefore devious.
Democrat Alani Bankhead says she was offered a job to drop out of the Montana Senate race "They offered to be ... the DNC's head of female veteran candidates or something like that. And I was like: 'Why would I go work for an organization that is actively working against me and stabbing me in the back" (reposted with correct spelling)

Christianity Today has seen about half its staff quit or laid off in the last 14 mos. Former employees told me that new business leaders have intervened in editorial decisions & are effectively abandoning the outlet's commitment to independent journalism. nytimes.com/2026/10/21/us/ch…

Alani Bankhead is one of the true villains of the election cycle. Alme is trapped in the low 40s in every poll. She single handedly is delivering him to the Senate.
Quantus poll | 10/15-10/18 LV US Senate Montana 2026 🟥Kurt Alme 43.8% ⬜️Seth Bodnar 28.2% 🟦Alani Bankhead 20.6% 🟨Kyle Austin 1.7% Link to poll: cdn.sanity.io/files/ifn0l6bs…

Even if you don't like McMorrow, we are learning a lot about how people with resources - and, you imagine, time to check into things - are drinking from the same X slop funnel. (So am I! It has the nutrients and electrolytes I crave.)
I ran a SuperPAC that supported @MalloryMcMorrow. This poll was used by several donors to pull back funding at a time we were being outspent by $80 million.

As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment" - Donations dried up - Volunteers were devastated and pleading for guidance on what to do - Reporters hounded me with calls to drop out Sure, a point was proven. Polling is broken. But tens of thousands of people poured their hearts, time, energy, hard-earned money into something they believed in - for a year-and-a-half, and it was treated like a game. Our volunteers gave their all. And then some. I felt like I had let so many of them down. To be extremely clear, Michigan Democrats are locked in to beat Mike Rogers. We WILL send @AbdulElSayed to the US Senate. But between crap like this, endless fundraising texts that drive supporters away with spammy fake deadlines and trash "match" claims, scam PACs run rampant for firms to grift without actually supporting candidates, undisclosed content creators pushing content out either misrepresenting themselves as residents of states they don't live in or hiding whether they were paid and by who so they could make a buck, and the tidal wave of dark money ads -- I hope Democrats are ready to blow up the system with campaign finance and transparency reforms. Trust is already at an all-time low. We don't get out of this mess without rebuilding trust. And media - who loves to ride the drama of a pollercoaster - needs to take a hard look at what's legitimate and what's not. If this teaches us anything - DON'T GET COMPLACENT AND DON'T TRUST THE POLLS. LOCK IN. SIGN UP FOR A CANVASSING SHIFT. LEAVE NOTHING TO CHANCE OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

Acton releases a response from her brother, which makes me think this will become even more of a backfire. Vivek has simultaneously elevated the horrific story of her upbringing, framed her as someone who's overcome unthinkable horror, and painted himself as a sleeze

"Love your enemies" is just sitting there waiting for ambitious Dems to use it in their messaging arsenal. Tbh works best if you have the reputation of a fighter.

Dan Osborn is low key a very good singer. Does a spot-on Neil Diamond impression too
Listen to my new song! I re-recorded the Johnny Cash song “I’ve Been Everywhere,” and replaced EVERY city with a city or village from Nebraska. That’s really me singing on the track. Real Nebraska musicians recorded this too. No AI-generated music here. 👍

I'm almost certain it won't be a single third party that emerges, but rather a new electoral system that allows multiple parties to gain representation and form coalitions. And yes, it does start to feel inevitable. More polling: newamerica.org/insights/prop…
There are all sorts of procedural and legal reasons why the U.S. has been a two-party country for so long, and I'm not convinced that the rise of a successful third party is imminent, but ... Well, let's put it this way: If and when a successful third party emerges in the next decade, people are going to pass around graphs like this in a "lol this is the most obvious development in modern political history" kind of way

Democrats love doing this shit where they’re like “oh people are concerned about affordability? What if we tell them that this other issue is actually affordability?” Maybe you should just tell them how you’re going to lower prices on energy, housing, and consumer goods
The decision to carry and raise a child can shape every part of a person’s financial life. @JessicaValenti joins Vox’s @AsteadWH to explain why abortion belongs in Democrats’ affordability message and what the party misses when it treats reproductive rights as a social issue.

This is exactly right. We’ll look back on the two-party system and wonder how anyone ever thought it would last

Celebrities should be shamed for taking money from socio-economic predators like Kalshi and Polymarket. This is a billionaire prying money out of the hands of struggling people.
From @TheAthletic: LeBron James will make nearly four times as much promoting the Polymarket prediction market as he will from playing basketball. The deal may not break NBA rules, but it raises uncomfortable questions. nyti.ms/476hxP5

Evil, self-absorbed, terrifying
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

This is priceless. Check out how local news is reporting on Sen Eric Schmidt’s clown-show grilling of Jack Smith. They found Jack Smith at the game… “Top corner, section 109, row 1. In fact, that seat doesn’t even exist in Atlanta.”

This is about as dumb as it gets in the Senate, and that’s obviously saying a lot
A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. Watch the whole thing:
