Today marks three years since #Azerbaijan's full scale offensive against de facto #NagornoKarabakh, preceded by a 10 month humanitarian blockade of the civilian population, eventually leading to the entire exodus of the native Armenian population, and subsequent settling of ethnic Azeris in the territories, in what has come to be a clear case of ethnic cleansing.
🧵Today marks the second year of #NagornoKarabakh's full capture by #Azerbaijan through a large-scale military offensive on the territory that had been blockaded for 10 months, with no food, medicines or essential products allowed in.
Armenia under Nikol Pashinyan's rule abandoning its role as security guarantor for the ethnic Armenian in NK eventually allowed Baku’s military offensive to succeed, triggering the mass flight of the entire Armenian population. Today, the region remains almost entirely depopulated, except for a few areas where the Azerbaijani government has resettled ethnic Azeris.

Diplomats, including from the US and EU, went to ethnically cleansed Nagorno-Karabakh and grinned as Hikmet Hajiyev claimed Armenian monasteries were “Albanian.”
Armenia responded—mildly. And absurdly, that mild reaction enraged the so-called “Western Azerbaijan” community.

Hikmet Hajiyev brought diplomats to an Armenian monastery he called “Albanian," then showed a blank volume as "proof" that Armenian history is falsified. The diplomats looked on and giggled.
It's not just undiplomatic, it's embarrassing. AZ's claims have been widely debunked.

Not so smart.
Armenian hostages illegally held in Azerbaijan have been subjected to torture targeting their Christian identity, including having crosses tattooed on their bodies burned from their skin, human rights lawyer Siranush Sahakyan said.
“There have been cases where hostages were forced to read the Quran. If there was a cross tattooed on the body, it was removed through torture,” Sahakyan said.
Sahakyan, president of the International and Comparative Law Center and legal representative of Armenian hostages before the European Court of Human Rights, said the targeting of Christian identity has also included denying Bibles and confiscating religious symbols.
She first raised the issue publicly in January, saying Bibles had been prohibited for Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian hostages even though other books were allowed, and that Christianity itself had become a factor in their treatment.
The abuse extends beyond religious persecution. Sahakyan said Armenian hostages have suffered fractures as a result of beatings, while concerns remain over deteriorating health and inadequate medical care. Medical personnel are not present at the detention facility at all hours, and treatment in serious cases is often limited to medication that temporarily eases symptoms rather than addressing underlying conditions.
The hostages also remain largely cut off from independent outside contact, without physical access to relatives, independent doctors, lawyers, consular representatives or the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The torture targeting Christian symbols comes against the backdrop of the destruction and alteration of Armenian Christian heritage across occupied Artsakh, where churches, cemeteries and other religious sites have been destroyed, damaged or stripped of their Armenian identity under Azerbaijani control.

Today marks 111 years since the Ottoman Empire began the Armenian Genocide, systematically killing an estimated 1.5 million Armenians through massacres and death marches.
This legacy of denial and erasure continued in 2023, when Azerbaijan imposed a nine-month blockade on Artsakh, followed by a military assault that ethnically cleansed over 120,000 indigenous Armenians from their homes. Villages were emptied, churches desecrated, and families fled with nothing.

Azerbaijan still holds 19 Armenian hostages, subjecting them to sham trials, torture, and unlawful detention.
Demand your government recognize the 1915 Genocide, condemn the Artsakh ethnic cleansing, and press for the immediate release of all Armenian hostages.
Silence enables repetition.

On Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, we remember the 1.5 million Armenians killed 111 years ago in a horrific genocide.
I was proud to be Speaker when Congress formally recognized the Armenian Genocide. And it was my honor to lead a Congressional delegation to visit the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial and pay respects to the men, women and children who were murdered.
By affirming the history of this tragedy, we work to make sure such horror can never again happen.
