South Carolina hasn’t elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1998, and routinely introduces bills to criminalize abortion patients. Andrews’ victory has shocked the nation and proves definitively that pro-choice candidates can win anywhere. Andrews has defeated Republican incumbent Darline Graham, who was appointed by Donald Trump to replace her brother Lindsey Graham after his death this summer.

More than anything, I hope this cycle teaches the Democratic Party that the South is always worth investing in early. There are so many quality candidates below the Mason-Dixon line. Good night for moderates and the politically homeless—Democrats are winning by holding competitive seats, not by going further left. Florida’s gerrymander isn’t delivering the GOP flips.
