OpenAI just announced that its AI system may have disproven the exponential time hypothesis.
If true, the main benefit would be a massive algorithmic revolution that unlocks ultra-fast, subexponential solutions for thousands of the world's most complex computational problems
That’s a lot to understand…
So we just asked Ulys where money would flow first and it put together the investment basket in seconds. Here it is👇
OpenAI just posted a 67 page paper titled "The Exponential Time Hypothesis is False." Here's what that means in plain English.
Picture a wall of light switches and a list of rules like "switch 3 OR switch 7 must be on." Find a setting that follows every rule. That puzzle is called 3-SAT.
The brute force way is trying every combination. Every switch you add doubles the work. 300 switches means more combinations than there are atoms in the universe.
For about 25 years computer scientists have assumed you can never escape that doubling. You can be clever and shave some off, but the blowup is baked in. That assumption is ETH, and a ton of other results are built on top of it.
OpenAI claims an algorithm that still blows up, just slower than ETH says is possible.
What it doesn't mean:
- It doesn't prove P = NP
- It doesn't make every hard problem easy
- It doesn't break Bitcoin. Turning SHA-256 into one of these puzzles takes tens of thousands of switches, and at that size this method is far slower than plain brute force.
Huge if true. It's a preprint and nobody has checked it yet. Watch what the complexity theorists say over the next few weeks.

Here's a direct link to OpenAI's PDF claiming a refutation of ETH. In particular, it's claimed that 3SAT on n variables is in about exp(n/(log n)^{1/2+o(1)}) time

I work fast and never keep my Mac organized. By the end of every week it’s chaos. I have a million things on my desktop, downloads are a mess, and starting Monday cluttered drives me crazy.
Every Sunday I’d spend way too long sorting, renaming and cleaning up files to prepare for the week.
So I built an app that does it for me.
Sunday Desk sorts everything into the right folders, creates new ones if needed, automatically recognizes files that belong to the same project, renames the messy files, and freshens up my Mac every Sunday so I start each week clear headed.
Figured I’m not the only one with this problem so I wanted to share.
Your first refresh is free, and I’d love your feedback 🙏. If you like it, it's less than $3/mo for an entire year.

I haven’t been this excited to go to sleep and for it to be tomorrow since November 23rd 2004.
