My new book is available for pre-order. The book looks at the Sisi's model of state capitalism, where I argue that this is an economic model where surplus values in Egypt are in a process of continuous pillaging , backed by mass state violence. bloomsbury.com/us/militarize…

God, this guy Metzl sounds like the worst of the 90s. El-Sayed will win without the endorsement of him and the Atlantic Council.
I am a proud and loyal Democrat. I served in President Clinton’s National Security Council and worked for Madeleine Albright at the State Department. I ran for Congress as a Democrat, have voted Democratic all my life, and expect to continue doing so. But I would never vote for Abdul El-Sayed. In my judgment, he does not represent the values of our party or our nation. I urge my fellow patriotic Democrats in Michigan to leave the Senate line blank or vote for Republican Mike Rogers. This is an exceptional case, and I do not make this recommendation lightly. We can support Democratic majorities nationally while refusing to support a candidate who violates our core values. Loyalty to our party should strengthen our principles, never require us to abandon them.

“Anyone who tries to erase the voices of Arab citizens is surrendering to Netanyahu and giving up on Israel,” says the leader of one of Israel’s main opposition parties. Let’s see if the rest of the Israeli opposition agrees, or decides to be not much different from Netanyahu and his allies after all.

What you call the “Jewish center” were parties (Bennett, Liberman) every analyst considered as far-right a few years ago.
If Israel's current exit polls hold, the parties representing the Jewish center will have to make a choice: partner with Arab parties or else keep Bibi in power. A pretty clear metaphor for the choice facing Israel more broadly.

Tibi, who is famous for saying Israel is democratic for Jews and Jewish for Palestinian citizens, just tweeted the effective results of the election as it’s looking: “It’s Bibi or Tibi” - repurposing Netanyahu’s racist campaigning

Lina Attalah has been released from custody several hours after she was convicted of operating an unlicensed website & forced to pay a EGP 3 million fine. The court also ordered the closure of Mada Masr. A pillar of independent journalism in the Arab world is in danger of closing

The equivalent in Japan is Hisayuki Fujii, who is a perfectly reasonable reform minded public servant. He has not been cheerleading the obliteration of innocent people with US taxpayer dollars. Bret Stephens is worse than not a serious person. This level of sophistry in the NY Times is dangerous.
NYT's Bret Stephens whines that Democrats know "Smotrich and Ben-Gvir" but not "the interior minister of Japan." Their "obsession" with Israel drives him "crazy." (Being politically informed on Israel is now anti-Semitic.)

As Attalah told me last week, Mada Masr had in fact dillgently sought to obtain licencing and was denied--a tactic to keep independent media like hers in a perpetual grey zone until they are deemed to have overstepped. thetimes.com/article/a4b9e07…
Following an absolute farcical trial that makes a mockery of the rule of law, an Egyptian court has fined @Linaattalah LE 3 million and ordered the closure of @MadaMasr, Egypt's leading independent media outlet, relied on by the world's diplomats, researchers, and scholars.

"One of Lauder’s most striking conclusions: “I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance.” In one of the interview’s biggest revelations, Lauder says Netanyahu agreed to a comprehensive peace deal with Syria and Lebanon, including withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but ultimately refused to sign it for political reasons. “He chose politics over peace. He put his political future before the deal.”
On this Israeli election day, I’d recommend reading this extraordinary @haaretzcom interview with billionaire Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and once one of Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants. One of Lauder’s most striking conclusions: “I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance.” This is coming from someone who helped launch Netanyahu’s political career, introduced him to powerful figures in American politics and media, and secretly negotiated with Hafez al-Assad and Rafik Hariri on his behalf in the late 1990s. In one of the interview’s biggest revelations, Lauder says Netanyahu agreed to a comprehensive peace deal with Syria and Lebanon, including withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but ultimately refused to sign it for political reasons. “He chose politics over peace. He put his political future before the deal.” Now 82, Lauder describes his profound disillusionment with Israel’s direction. After decades of supporting Israeli and Jewish institutions, he has sold his Tel Aviv apartment, given away his Be’er Sheva property, and says he has no intention of returning to Israel. He warns that Netanyahu’s dependence on figures like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich is damaging Israel, alienating diaspora Jews and eroding support in Washington. The interview is also full of fascinating details about Lauder’s role in Netanyahu’s political rise. The two became close friends in the 1980s, when Netanyahu was Israel’s ambassador to the UN, speaking almost daily at times. Lauder says he introduced Netanyahu to speech coach Lilyan Wilder to improve his public speaking and, crucially, to Republican strategist Arthur Finkelstein, who would become instrumental in Netanyahu’s electoral success. When Netanyahu left New York to pursue a political career in Israel, Lauder threw him a farewell party attended by some of the most influential figures in American media and politics, including Rupert Murdoch and the head of the New York Times. Lauder recalls opening doors for Netanyahu and helping him cultivate the relationships that would underpin his rise to power. What makes this interview so revealing is that Lauder is no longtime critic of Israel. He had been a committed Zionist, a Republican power broker, and a man who spent decades financing Jewish institutions, cultivating relationships with Arab leaders, and pursuing diplomatic openings on Israel’s behalf. A fascinating read 👇 haaretz.com/israel-news/elec…

Earlier this summer, the wonderful editors at @thebafflermag asked me if I wanted to contribute an essay for a forthcoming issue. I said I wanted to write about Iranian bricks. Iran's remarkable brick architecture has become something of a meme. Everyday there's a new picture circulating online of a beautiful brick edifice in some Iranian city (often courtesy of @SustainableTall). But why is Iran, a country dealing with so many traumas, the site of the most innovative and ambitious brick architecture in the world? That's the question I set out to answer in this essay, which starts with a visit to the mudbrick village of Abyaneh, just over the ridge from the nuclear site at Natanz. thebaffler.com/salvos/brick-…

I would love one day for the opportunity to interview or debate Bret Stephens. He says so much nonsense with so much confidence. The whataboutism is here is pathetic. Is the interior minister of Japan daily bragging about mass murder and ethnic murder and making foreign mothers cry? Is the interior minister of Japan receiving billions of dollars in US military aid? Is the interior minister of Japan's government being investigated by the ICJ for genocide and wanted at the ICC for war crimes? Are we in a war alongside Japan right now? Do US politicians, both GOP and Dem, declare they entered politics to defend Japan or have dreams about Japan? I could keep going...

There are no words—defense lawyers denied adequate time to review case files, a judge refusing to hear witnesses or review documents, police officers filling the room, the court appointing @Linaattalah a lawyer AGAINST her will and despite her 8-person legal team. For shame.

I hate this condescending whataboutism. Yes Bret, if the interior minister of Japan was a right-wing religious zealot using US taxpayer money for ethnic cleansing, they would probably be better known.

In a sham proceeding, a Cairo court has fined Mada Masr chief editor @Linaattalah 3 million EGP on charges of operating a website without a license & ordered the closure of Mada Masr, one of Egypt’s last remaining independent media outlets. Lina is detained until the fine is paid

Reading the Western reporting from the campaign trail in Israel, you can see the return of a fantasy: that our wayward ally might become a normal country overnight by ejecting the one man who caused all the trouble. For @equatormag, I asked @NathanThrall how to read the result:
