I wrote a bite encouraging professors to have students write their own @astrobites for class!
Thanks to @battersbot, @david_kipping, @CDPLagos, Zhang Zhiyu, & @briles_34 -- who figured out how to do this (incl. w/ @AstroK80 & Mitchell Cavanagh) -- for helping me put it together!
From @theAstroHammer: Over the last few years, we have been publishing Astrobites that students wrote for their courses. This is how those bites came to be! astrobites.org/2022/06/03/wr…

Here are some interview tips for US-based astro grad programs!
(Source: my experience on grad interview committees at Caltech Astro a few years ago. Take with a grain of salt—all programs are different, and admissions committees change every year!) 🧵

As promised, here are some sample questions to ask at the end of a PhD program interview:
- How do students get matched to advisors? Can students work with multiple advisors? Can students work with non-faculty (postdocs, staff scientists)?

In a paper out in @nature today, the ultimate origin story…we can now explain how all nearby star formation (within ~ 500 light years of our Sun) began. A thread. (More from @AlyssaAGoodman) (1/N) youtu.be/HGZQ4SmDxcQ

Aight, story coming imminently, but for now: The top #Astro2020 space-based rec is... A program to develop a whole series of new Great Observatories, starting with a ~6-meter telescope to image and characterize dozens of potentially habitable exoplanets (and much more).

Check out this awesome work — especially if you have the ability to influence the graduate admissions process for your program!
Looking to make your graduate admissions process more equitable? Our latest research suggests that using rubric-based holistic review for applicants is a promising and practical way to do so. 1/n arxiv.org/abs/2110.04329

ALT Rubric-based holistic admissions is a more equitable approach to graduate admissions. "We showed that faculty ratings of applicant’s grades, research experiences, and noncognitive abilities do not differ based on the applicant’s sex or undergraduate background. The differences we did observe in faculty ratings could be explained as observing known systematic issues in physics regarding test scores and service work expectations."

Wondering about where your @AAS_Publishing articles might land in the new #AASOpenAccess pricing tiers but don't have a sense of how many "quanta" you usually create? The typical article is about 30 quanta.
